How to identify old or new bootrom for iPhone 3GS

This guide is created to help those who are confused with what their iPhone 3GS' bootrom versions are. The devs haven't created a specific software/tool to make it easier for 3GS users but they are kind enough to tell us how.

Basically, these are the two (2) bootroms used in the 3GS:
  • OLD bootrom - iBoot-359.3
  • NEW bootrom - iBoot-359.3.2
Now, the problem is, how to locate that.

This is how

FOR MAC USERS
  1. Connect/plug-in your iPhone 3GS to your Mac
  2. Put iPhone to DFU Mode. (Read below)
  3. Go to Applications>Utilities> and open System Profiler
  4. Under the Hardware category, go to USB, and click on Apple Mobile Device (DFU Mode)
  5. At the lower part of that, you will find the detailed info. Look for Serial Number and you'll find the bootrom version at the end.
This is how it should look like (click on image to view larger): kid_ant_6.pngkid_ant_67.jpgkid_ant_6.png

FOR WINDOWS USERS
  1. Connect/plug-in your iPhone 3GS to your Windows
  2. Put iPhone to DFU Mode (Read below)
  3. Open Device Manager, open Universal Serial Bus controllers by clicking on the + sign beside it
  4. Select Apple Mobile Device USB Driver, right-click & select Properties
  5. Go to Details tab & select Device Instance Id from the dropdown menu
  6. You'll find the bootrom version at the end of the code on the lower box.
This is how it should look like (click on image to view larger): kid_ant_6.pngkid_ant_68.jpgkid_ant_6.png

Entering DFU Mode
  1. Plug/connect your device to a computer
  2. Turn it OFF
  3. Press and hold the POWER and HOME buttons together for EXACTLY 10seconds
  4. Release the POWER button but keep holding the HOME button until the computer beeps indicating that a USB device is recognized
If you don't get it at first, try holding the buttons for lesser time.

My iphone is beeping when attach to the computer but no display

This could be from several reasons. The most common would be if the battery is really low. Another could be if the IPhone is prompting you whether or not the computer is "trusted".

Phone says trust then doesn't show up on computer

Timing is everything unplug phone then plug back in(cable connection works best for initial trust setup - to avoid any disconnected wifi issues etc. you also need to be in front of your computer of choice AND your iPhone, tethering with cable ensures this is true. uncheck some of the sync options then re check them some of the info, such as contacts calendar etc. will prompt trust on the screen - look at computer for pop up prompts as well as it can show up on phone or computer depending on sync type, # of accounts on that machine etc.

Iphone shows connect to itunes when plugged to computer it says the device its not started.

Basically, you need to put it to DFU and restore.
Here's one way of putting your iPhone to DFU:
  1. Plug/connect your device to a computer (PC or Mac)
  2. Turn it OFF
  3. Press and hold the POWER and HOME buttons together for EXACTLY 10seconds
  4. Release the POWER button but keep holding the HOME button until the computer beeps indicating that a USB device is recognized.
  5. Open iTunes and restore your device.

Warning: Restoring will delete all data on your device but this is the only way for you to recover it.

If you don't get it at first, try holding the buttons for lesser time or see the other procedures on my tip (link below):

My iphone charges but won't turn on

I see this problem usually with haxed iphones, is yours haxed? Try plugging it into your computer, does your cpu recognize it and load itunes? even if it still shows the red battery. If you cant get itunes to recognize it then do a restore and this should fix the problem. If the above does not work you can try and press the power button for 5sec keep holding it and then plug it in to a power source, keep holding the button for another 5sec after and see what happens. If all else fails it may be time for a hard reset, if you dont know how, press and hold the menu button and the power button till you hear a beep, then let go of the power button and keep holding the menu button till you hear a second beep. Apple iphone 3g

I had this happen to me recently - it happened when I used my old ipod USB lead rather than the USB lead that came with the iphone. I tried a lot of things to resolve it, but the only thing that fixed it was using the USB lead that came with the iphone(it should NOT have the squeeze clips on the sides of the phone plug) to plug it into my PC and let itunes perform its sync.

Good luck!

Installation issue - Not recognizing

hmm, no problem plugging in either side, just be sure to do the power cable first. What's doing the beep, beep?

Found a guy who had similar prob, here was his solution:
Go to Control Panel. Click on Device Manager.
Check to see if FreeAgent is shown as a disk drive.
If not, check the device list for any Free Agent device, double click and check driver. No driver installed? Update does not work? On the driver tab….click uninstall device.
Shut down computer. Unplug Free agent USB and power at the drive.
Reboot computer. As it is rebooting, plug in the power cord. Wait a minute or two….then plug in USB cord.

Windows will “found new device” ….. Just let the computer complete the reboot.
Then go to the device manager. Chances are you will find Free Agent in the drives….and in the USB list of devices. Open windows explorer….and you should see you Free Agent as a drive.
Windows will ask you to install manufacturer disk. You have no disk…non needed. Windows has installed the device. Just click on close. I you keep getting windows wants to install device…..ignore it. You can click on “don’t ask again”. (That is if your Free Agent drive is showing in the device manager as a disk…and in windows explorer….along with your other drive or drives.)
If at some later time….your Free Agent drive does not appear….repeat the steps as listed above.
(You may think it is not working….or that it has gone bad. Try this before you try to return.)
Seagate Tools…the new version….does not recognize to diagnose the Free Agent….
I have not tried Seagate Tools after getting the computer to recognize the drive.
I am surprised Seagate does not provide a Tool to recognize their own drives…and install and/or test Free Agent.

This does work for me with Vista. Thought I had lost the drive…. Seagate should provide a patch or a drive that Windows will recognize when you get the “found new hardware” and Windows asks you to insert manufacturer’s installation disk. I do not understand why that is not already there….a driver file for Free Agent...that Windows would install.

I did not buy Pro….because I did not need the backup software. I wonder if those who bought Pro are having these problems.
