It may take a bearing separator to remove it as it may have fused to the shaft over the years.

  • I have broken them loose by "popping" the steering wheel up.
  • Another way is to put the nut back on about 1/2 way, have someone hold the steering wheel up (firmly) then smack the nut from the bottom and drive the shaft upwards.
  • A third way. Again, have someone firmly hold the steering wheel as high up as possible. Then hammer a punch against the bottom end of the steering shaft.

You should price a new wiring harness, around $80 so there is not much reason to spend a lot of time trying to find shorts or open wiring.

SOURCE: My John Deere L130 riding mower quits after it has been running

A John Deere repair guy showed me how to fix this. It is very simple. Remove the gas cap. Pop out the liner in the gas cap with a thin pocket knife. Clean out the cap. From the top of the cap, where it comes to a peak, take a very fine point (even a small knife blade will do) and make sure the little hole in the top (that you didn't know was there) is clear. The engine is starving because the gas tank is not properly vented. I suffered with this problem for two years until he came to sharpen my blades and I asked him about this. A two minute, free fix did it and I have never had problems again.

How do you get the gear at the end of the steering shaft off to replace it on a John Deere la175 lawn tractor?

It's a lock nut. But you should have no trouble removing it. Just hold the steering wheel, or turn it all the way to one side. But a socket on the nut below the gear and ratchet it off. That's all there is too it.

it has a steering wheel not steer arms... your issue is either something is bent/broken, the steering shaft is stripped or the steering wheel is just off

Rebuild steering on john deere L120

Hi there, I am not familliar with the L120 specifically, and suggest that you go to: "John Deere Lawn Mower Manuals" online and select your model from there. In my experience with this type of unit there are two ways that the pressed gear on the end of the shaft is fitted.. Real engineers make a ferrule, usually about twice the diameter of the steering shaft, and have either a tapered end with a threadded end for a nut which often has a split pin thru the thread like a trailer wheel bearing, and a key in the shaft and taper. Machines made with a lesser labour input often have a fixed pinion which means replacing both the shaft and the pinion. If it is the tapered end with a nut, they are often very tight and cannot be removed while mounted in the machine. They may require a sharp heat and severe blow with a good hammer. I do not recommend that you do this if you are not competent as the blow to the nut can do much damage if not hit square with a cushion of copper between the hammer and nut. The fact that you do not know how to do this job probably means that it is cost effective to employ a shop which does this type of work.

There's a gear on the end of the steering column that's broken or the roll pin used to hold it on is sheared.

My L130 will not turn right.

you will need to change the steering gear , and the steering pinion and its not a bad idea to change the gear pivots (2) and also the bottom steering wheel shaft bushing. they sell a complete kit on ebay that has it all in one nice n tidy kit.> http://www.ebay.com/itm/JOHN-DEERE-STEERING-GEAR-REPAIR-KIT-102-135-LA120-LA155-/261112192757?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3ccb7fdef5

dont let the high price full you, just the pinion $40 and the steering gear $32 is $72 and you get both and the $10 bushings x2 plus for the same price!!

Steering Wheel will turn when mowing. Trying to get steering wheel off as given in the John Deer Manual, but steering wheel frozen and won't budge. What else can be done to remove the steering wheel...

If you have the main nut removed, you can give the steering shaft a few shots of penetrating oil like Liquid Wrench or PB Blaster (available at auto parts stores). After lubing, let it soak at least a few hours. 24 is good. You may have to get one of those cheap "gear pullers" from like the Harbor Freight store to finally pull it off though.

John deere 68 riding mower steering column won't turn wheel assembly via arced toothed plate. Wheel assembly OK and greased. Some minor play when rotating steering column with steering wheel, but appears...

Just had same problem with my craftsmen. There is a very inadequate little nylon bushing supposed to keep that shaft stable. When worn out it allows that shaft to move and puts the gears in a bind. It is located on the end closest to arced gear where shaft hooks to drag link. Its a pain.
