Oops. You should at least have a sim from a provider the phone is locked to. You also need a code from the provider to unlock and a procedure how to.
When the phone is out of the contract (most likely for a 3 to 4 year old phone) goto a store of your provider close to you and ask them for help. I know there are some (less legal) sites, who offer e code too, but first pay, no cure? no refund is most likely. And then again you need a sim from the original provider.
