What kind of velvet? Poly-based fabrics often require ball-point needles to avoid pulls. For apparel weight velvet (something I'd make a skirt with), I'd probably use at least an 90, possibly heavier. For really heavy, upholstery-weight, I'd use my walking-foot machine and a 100-110 (often used for jeans). But I'm sure I'd want to bind all of the seams on my serger, I often bind after sewing the regular seams, but for very heavy fabrics I'd bind first (just run up all of the edges of each piece before sewing seams).
Hope this helps.

Keep breaking needles when i put down presser foot to sew iwant to sew straight stich to hem a curtain

If the needle is hitting something, make sure you have the machine set for straight stitch and the needle is in the center position. If it is still hitting and breaking, then the machine is out of adjustment and needs to be repaired.

What is the correct needle size for a elna 3003 sewing machine

130/705h, standard sewing machine needle for 99% of all domestic machines. Flat shank to the back of the machine. Sharp or universal for woven, ball point for stretch fabrics. Choose needle size depending on fabric weight you are sewing. 60 for fine silk, 70 cotton voile, 80 for poplin, 90 for home spun or drill, 100 for denim, 110 for coating, curtains etc.

I have a sewing machine-single needle model 03914, but I don't how to put the needle for delicate fabric and for thick fabric?

Use size 60 for very fine (chiffon), size 70 for light weights like voile and cotton, 80 or 90 for medium weights such as a broadcloth, size 100 for denim and size 110 for something very heavy like a thick curtain or upholstery weight fabric. If you aren't sure what size to use, try pushing a needle into the fabric you are going to sew with your fingers, if it goes in easily and the hole it leaves is not noticeable then it is okay, if it leaves a big hole, then go down a size. If you use a needle that is too small on a fabric, then it is going to go blunt quickly or break.

good info here http://sewing.about.com/od/sewingmachineindex/ig/Sewing-Machine-Needles/Needle-Sizes.--94.htm on needle sizes.

The thread in the needle has started to snap after a few stitches. I am sewing curtains with thermal linings. finished one curtain ok. problem with second one. could it be needle.

When I've had this problem in the past, changing to a new needle has usually worked. The thermal linings can wear down the needles quickly, and you might do well with a slightly heavier needle as well.

My machine is also jumping stitches.

Make sure that you have a new needle and not a used one.

If you are sewing lightweight curtains, use a size 80/12 needle. If heavier fabric, a size 90/14.

Make sure that the needle is inserted with the flat side to the back.

Inspect the needle plate where the needle goes through and check for burrs. If there are burrs, use a very fine sandpaper folded flat to fit through the hole to remove them.

Take out the hook and inspect it for burrs as well. Take care not to dull the tip of the hook.

Set the upper tension knob/dial to 5.

Use Mettler or Gutermann thread and Schmetz needles. This can make a huge difference.

you may have some lint not seen and use some canned air and try that you may need a new needle it could be bent. or even broken and a piece is still in the little tight crease in the bobbin holder.try all that first and then check your tension did it get moved by the fabric? when you wrer making the curtains?
