SOURCE: Mitsubishi Mr Slim mini split outdoor unit fan.

Check the capacitor. Rating must be within 90% of rated microfarads. If it is a dual capacitor test between C and FAN. Set your meter to read microfarads (uF).

SOURCE: 38CKC060 Carrier. Outdoor unit-fan does

It sounds like your fan motor is burnt up. If the noise you are hearing is coming from the motor itself, then it's going to have to be replaced. One way to check this also is to turn the unit off and try to turn the fan blades by hand, if you cant get to it, then use something skinny and long enough to drop through the opening on top. If there is any resistance, than its difinitly a bad motor. If the noise you are hearing is coming from the compressor, then your fan motor still might have a chance and only needs a capacitor which is a round or oval part inside the units electrical compartment. Depending on how mechanically inclined you are, it is possible to fix these yourself. Just a warning though, if your fan hasn't been running and the compressor has, it can or could burn up the compressor also. This is another reason why it can be hot inside the cage. Your compressor will go into internal lockout if it gets to hot and will not come back on until it cools, but it can only handle so much. Hope this points you in the right direction and good luck!

SOURCE: outdoor unit on of my

If this is an old unit is is possible that the compressor is vibrating with the load. check and see if the mounting bushes and the foundation is tight and clamped properly. If not the unit must be removed and plugged well into a good foundation. Also check the mounting bushes of the compressor , If this wont solve there is fault within the compressor , possible low lubrication that make it vibrate which might require a consensus and estimate.-- specially if the cooling is going down.

Its possible that the contactor that closes to start the outdoor unit is not pulling in and passing power. You are hearing the coil humming since it is getting control power. Also first check that breaker for outdoor unit is not tripped

Is it normal for the outdoor unit on my coleman h/p to make a surging humming noise? the fan does not run during this period, approx. temp. is 28 degrees F. the fan runs 30 seconds befor the unit...

Sounds like your unit is going into defrost mode. When this happens the fan in the outdoor unit shuts off so you get more heat in the outdoor unit to defrost the coils. The heatpump is basically in A/C mode during defrost and the electric heat strips will kick in so you don't feel a cold blast of air in the house.

I think you mean in outdoor unit fan. Check the fan blade- may be broken or bearing problem with fan motor.

Weatherking heat pump sounds noisy but has a 20 degree air difference from intake to vents, is this normal?

Without hearing the "noise" it is difficult to diagnose via internet; however, I can tell you that the 20 degF temperature difference is a good sign.

If the noise is at the outdoor unit, try to determine if it is the casing or something else. Sometimes the casing can rattle and/or vibrate that can cause a sound. Sounds can also come from refrigerant lines rubbing against the casing. Other noise sources at the outdoor unit are the fan motor, fan blade assembly, and compressor. You can remove one of the fan motor wires from the contactor, tape off the end, and start up the unit for a few seconds to see if the noise is still present. Then you can replace the wire and remove the compressor wires from the contactor and repeat the test. This will help you determine where the sound is coming from.
If the sound is coming from your indoor unitl, the most common sources are loose tape, Blower wheel, blower motor, or blower housing. Also look for loose panels.

Without being onsite with toolbox in hand and being able to actually hear the sound, I hope you find this information to be helpful to you moving forward. :-)

Our air con runs, on heat, and after a time cuts out, blows cold and makes a sort of hissing noise (but not a real hiss) and then shuts down. It then restarts after a couple of minutes. Is this normal?

Yes.Think of a heat pump as a A/C in reverce in cool indoor coil is cold&outdoor coil is hot.Naw indoor coil is hot &outdoor coil is cold&fan is pulling in cold air from outside.its going to iceup& go into defrost cycle. If your unit has a timed defrost every 30,60,or90min.(witch ever yours is set for)Defrost control board checks a sensor on cond.coil,if it is frozen unit goes into defost. You will here a swishing noise, iis the reversing of refrigerant.you will also notice the outdoor fan is not operating&at termanation of defrost fan will blow out steem.the other metod is on demand defrost.when coil freezes unit defrosts.

Outside fan does not kick on just buzzes

The buzzing noise sounds like the contactor is energizing and if it is then you need to check to see if you have power 230 volts to the outdoor unit, if not, check the fuses or breaker, if you do have power then you may have a broken or burnt wire inside the outdoor unit.
