Check your ipod to see if it is shuffle mode. Alpine doesn't document this but they have a bug that causes the problem that you describe. If the ipod is in shuffle mode the Alpine gets confused.

CLICK HERE for your owners manual in PDF format.
Please see Page 19 on how to toggle ON the AUX IN function on the radio
A KCA-121B (alpine bus to RCA) adapter is required.
AI-3NPUT (alpine bus to Female 3.5mm) adapter is required.
There is no alternate INPUT on the rear of this radio - an adapter is required... converting the changer port to an input.

Sorry to say my friend, but the problem is with the Archose. I recently installed a Soundstream unit for a customer of mine, and he had an Archos aswell. The Archose will go in to slave mode, and act as a removeable mass media storage, but that's as far as it will go. Other mass storage units will work fine, you can even use a regular old usb thumb drive, but not the Archose.

SOURCE: Alpine CDA-9886 error 1
If your head unit in Ipod mode reads "error 01" followed by "searching", remove your Ipod from the connector and let the battery run out. Once the battery runs out, hook your Ipod up to your computer for charging and launch your Itunes when your battery regains some power. Your Ipod will then be detected by your Itunes and your good to go again to hook up to your Alpine head unit. This fix worked for me as the "error 01" and freezing has only happened once to me.
