It is a self-propeled walk-behind type. The cable is not pulling or pushing the parts attached to it. It seems too long or too loose. The owners manual says to see info on the throttle cable in the shop manual, which costs around $40. They do not make the diagrams available online.

There are two nuts on the cable from the throttle to the gas pedal
Loosen the outer nut then tighten the inner nut. Repeat that till you get the slack you want. It should be 1/4 " to 3/8" on that car.

OH! Sorry, I didn't even look. ...I suppose it works similar but may be harder to get to....I have to remember to look at what we're talking about. Thanks for the heads-up. Good luck with the lawn mower, I don't have one.myself.

Hi, Danielle and the usual suspects are:
1. Severely discharged or a damaged battery, should have 12.5 volts or better and be able to pass a load test if necessary.
2. Failed alternator/generator and or voltage regulator.
3. Loose or corroded battery terminals and or cables especially the "NEGATIVE" cable, look for loose, corroded, or broken connectors inside the cable harness at "BOTH" ends.
4. Failed main circuit breaker or ignition switch, check for loose connections and continuity.
5. Failed system and or ignition relay, check for continuity.
6. Failed ignition coil, ignition/electronic module.
7. Failed CKP, CPS, CMP, MAP, TPS, or BAS sensor, corroded, loose or broken wire connector pins/sockets.
8. Throttle cables and or idle speed improperly adjusted hot idle speed should be 950 RPM to 1000 RPM.
9. Air/fuel mixture screw improperly adjusted.

The throttle cable has come loose or broke at the speed lever, I don't know what a good or new cable should look like

These throttle cables are usually held down with a ***** and tab.
If it is loose simply adjust to best fit and tighten. You do not want a lot of flexing as you operate the throttle lever. This could cause the cable to break. Don't worry about what a cable looks like as long as the cable inside slides easily. Some cable lube once in awhile will go a long way to preventing rusty hard to use throttle cables.
These cables are generally used on everything and very common.
Ergo.... inexpensive. Good luck Hope this helps.

How do I adjust the thorttle settings?

follow the throttle cable down to the throttle plate you should see a screw with a clamp holding the cable loosen it up pull back on the throttle cable a little tighten the screw down see if it works better as for as the govenor its tricky better left to a mechanic because engine might rev up and blow crank so leave it to them start when you pick it up if sounds to fast have them adjust it right then charlie

You can't make any adjustments, the idle speed is controlled automatically by a computer called the ECM.

Why does my polaris mv700 quad start, but as soon as i let go of the throttle it dies?

Sounds like the ETC switch on the right handle bar is not adjusted correctly. If there is too much play in the throttle cable, points inside the switch will contact and kill the spark. On the throttle cable coming out of the box on the handlebar, there is a rubber boot. Inside the boot is an adjustment screw, turning clockwise will loosen throttle play, counterclockwise will tighten throttle play. The thumb throttle should have 1/8 to 1/16 inch freeplay before it starts to tighten against the throttle cable. Try that and let me know, that usually is the culprit. Daniel

1996 sportsman 400 wont idle. Had the carb cleaned by a "mechanic" after the bike took off wide open and driver was injured. He said the float stuck and he "fixed" the problem. Now...

I have NEVER heard of a float sticking and causing that issue. Sounds to me like the Electronic Throttle Control (ETC) on the right handlebar isn't or wasn't adjusted. There is a thumb nut on the throttle cable coming out of the ETC switch. Loosen the screw and turn the cable in or out to get 1/16 to 1/8 inch freeplay on the thumb throttle. Too loose and it won't idle, too tight and it will pull the throttle cable tight and rev engine. It could also be a carburetor issue if it runs with choke. Either the idle screw isn't adjusted or the pilot jet is plugged. There is a large thumb screw coming off the carburetor, turning clockwise will turn the idle up. Let me know if you need anything else, Daniel.

1998 Ducati Monster 750 won't start. Ticks over ok, but won't "fire". New fuel in tank only two days ago, ran several trips since, just won't start now. Tried push-start, sounds like...

Hi, Mlyndon and the usual suspects are:
1. Fuel tank empty.
2. Fuel supply valve/petcock turned off.
3. Fouled spark plugs.
4. Engine flooded as a result of overuse of the enricher.
5. Vacuum hose to the fuel supply valve/petcock disconnected, broken, cracked, or pinched.
6. Fuel valve/petcock or filter clogged.
7. Discharged battery, check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
8. Loose or corroded wire connection at the coil, battery or plug between ignition sensor and module.
9. Spark plug cables in bad condition and shorting, cable connections loose, or connected to the wrong cylinders.
10. Ignition timing incorrect due to a faulty ignition coil, ignition module or sensors (MAP, CMP, CKP, O2 and/or BAS).
11. Security alarm needs a reset.

Loose throttle cable, how do you tighten it?

On a 2001 kia im not sure if there is an adjustment or not but if there is it would at the end of the jacket on the cable where it hooks to the top of the intake manifodl and would have a lock nut and the end of the jacket would be threaded but sometimes the cables streach and start to fray if you see fraying you should replace becase the throttle can hang up and stick on
