That's a bit of a task to sort out. If you aren't up for a full strip down and clean up followed by new gears and repack with grease then contact Kitchen Aid for a local repairer. You will be up for a couple of gears and maybe even the top housing if the bush for the accessory drive gear is wrecked. If you need "how to" help then get back to me for step by step.

It just sounds like a broken gear. Easy to fix just time consuming.

In a k45ss I would recommend replacing the three main gears, this would include the Worm & Pinion Gear Assembly part number 240309-2, the bevel pinion center gear, part number 9709627 & the attachment drive gear, part number 9705130. The mixers are not hard to take apart just mostly time consuming.

We have a full service manual on our website that shows step by step how to take apart your mixer, replace parts and reassembly the mixer as well. Here is a link to the service manual:
http://ep.yimg.com/ty/cdn/mendingshed/kitchenaidservicemanual.pdf

When you open up the mixer it is usually a good idea to replace the grease (be sure to use non-toxic vegetable grease, KitchenAid recommends a Benelene 930-2 grease) and the gearbox gasket part number 4176597-10.

KitchenAid's are great mixers, and they last a very long time, gears are a common repair in the mixers, and most handy people can repair them by themselves. If you have any questions or need help finding parts feel free to contact us.

Artisan mixer quit rotating. I took it apart and the hub bevel gear was frozen in the case. I beat it out but the bearing surface is pretty deeply scarred. I am wondering if I can sand the shaft enough...

You can certainly continue to use it without the accessory drive gear. Repair without replacing the gear and housing (the proper way) will leave you with a less than optimal accessory drive but if you don't overwork it it could last. Clean it out and polish the bearing surface on the gear up a but then get some good grease into the grooves on bush & bearing and bang it back together. You don't have a lot to lose.

Squeak while mixing.

That sounds like the accessory drive is binding in the bush in the front housing. Don't use it and think seriously about getting it to a Kitchen Aid service agent. No good will come of forcing the issue. If you never use any accessories in that front drive you could consider asking them to remove the gear and put it back together again without it. If you force it to continue eventually the fuse gear will fail and you could even wreck the gear that drives the planetary. The accessory gear will need to be replaced and if the bush is damaged enough the top housing will need to be replaced as the bush is not available separately.

I have a KitchenAid Professional 600 Series 6-Quart Stand Mixer, model KP26M1XBS, which no longer works. I was mixing pretzel dough and the mixer stopped turning. I initially just thought it overheated...

Don't worry about the Worm Gear for now. You have to make sure that the Motor
is fully functional by itself: Remove the Transmission Housing Cover (4 screws) and
the two screws holding the Motor down. Lift the Motor off the Worm Gear and set it
on the side (be careful of AC voltages from the Motor and Control Assembly).
Select Stir setting and observe the motor shaft. Is the Motor running? If it is,
Select other speeds to see how the motor performs.
With the motor now fully functional, you can now check the Worm Gear Follower
for worn out/broken teeth. Remember the motor drives the Worm Gear, it then in
turn drives the Worm Gear Follower (you may have to remove the grease to see it)
The Bevel Gear sits right on top of the Follower and drives the Attachment Gear.

Kp26m1xwh Kitchenaid mixer 575 watt stopped working.

On the back of the mixer is a screw holding on the Kitchenaid name plate band that wraps around the mixer. Remove this screw and the name plate and then you'll see four screws (two on each side) holding on the top cover for the mixer. Remove the four screws and then lift off the top cover and you'll see the motor, circuit board and gear box that operate the mixer.

KitchenAid KSM90 gear stripped?

I just ran into this problem when the PLASTIC worm gear broke and then the mixer would not power on after I replaced the gear. The problem was due to the was I tried to dissasemble the mixer. I removed the two plastic screws near the top center of the mixer when attempting to disassemble. These do not have anything to do with the assembly it turns out the attached square pieces (attached to these screws by springs) must be in the proper orientation to run. I put them in the way it showed in a diagram but it did not work until I tried all four different combinations that they could be rotated. Two of the rotations on the square could be eliminated by closely looking at the end where it contacts the shaft. The round shaft marking will be evident on the square inserts. I'mnotsure how to better describe them, but the are attached by springs to the plastic screws on both sides of the top of the mixer.
