If I push to full throttle it will die unless I apply some choke, and then I can get to full throttle, but then if I engage the mower it will not pick up the load but just dies

Depends which 324 you have. If is the X324 then you have a dropped cylinder. V-twin will run great on cylinder until loaded.

If it twin barrel carburetor it can have plugged jet affecting one side only.

Also one of the ignition coils may not be working, bad spark plug, or other problem affecting only one cylinder.

Sounds like a fuel delivery problem. Filter? fuel tank outlet clogged? fuel shutoff valve not completely open? Other issues.

Thanks gbob59, that is exactly what I thought, so changed filter, checked that fuel flows freely from the tank and at last replaced fuel pump, with no results.

I'm guessing you have a carburator, not fuel injection? If so, it's possible a main jet is clogged (not likely) or a problem with the float, or the float valve. Although if there are any vacuum hoses that are off, that will cause too much air to go in and change the air fuel mixture, which partially explains why the choke helps. Another issue are all gaskets from carburator to engine must also be sound. One way to check is propane torch (unlighted) which will identfy any gasket leaks because the engine will pick up speed with the additional fuel (propane) coming into the air fuel system. This is mildly dangerous, so you may want a mechanic to do this diagnostic step if you are uncomfortable with it.

How do i fix my ariens lawn mower

Does sound like the the throttle control govener linkage is either in need of adjusting, The throttle control govener linkage is the part that connects the throttle to the internal engine part a mechanizum that will activate the throttle when the engine is put under a load, to keep the engine from stalling and to increase the RPM Rotations per minute of the engine when their is a load on the engine, by advancing the throttle control in the intake manifold . Or the linkage is binding and not activating properly ! Check to see if the throttle plate does move freely and is not stuck.and that the wire type linkage is connected to the throttle plate !

Sounds like a problem with the governor. Start it up. Don't engage the blades. Drive to a hill. Idle all the way down. Try driving up the hill. The motor should pick up when it slows while pulling up the hill. If it doesn't, the governor isn't working right.

I had the same symptoms, after bumping the corner of my house - slow drive speed, actually slow rotation of engine. Tried cleaning air filter, replacing drive belt, spark plug; no difference. Took to JD today figuring it was the carb. They went to a piece of the linkage under the shroud ahead of the air filter; a piece must have been bent. I did not see closely enough to know exactly what, but perhaps it will be evident upon inspection.

It sounds like a head gasket is blown, with the engine cold start it and spray water on each exhaust pipe,if one cylinder has a problem it will run cooler, the water will tell you which one is running cooler. Also you might want to clean the carburetor and check the fuel cap vent.
