Question about Heating & Cooling
Are the second set of wires not used, or how are they connected, if at all ??

So my question is this is electric heat? it sounds it so next question is it 120 or 240 volt. but you will have a black and a white wire from your electric panel feeding the line side of the thermostat then another wire loading from the t-stat to the electric heat. i hope this helps. Without knowing the brand and model - it's hard to be sure - but if it is it a built-in electric baseboard heater; most are designed to be powered at either end. The typical manner is power is brought to the thermostat. Power from the switched output of the thermostat is brought to either end of the heater and connected to the wires from the heater. The opposite end of the heater should have the heater wires connected together. They may also be used to bring power to a second heater that is to be controlled by the same thermostat - usually only if it is very close by though. As long as there are no other wires at this end of the heater - simply connect them together - otherwise the heater will not work. You should do this work with power OFF. Most heaters that are built in are 240 volts and can kill you if you're not paying attention!

First make sure this is a heater set up for a remote mounted thermostat. If so, the gas valve has 3 screws labeled TH (thermostat) and TP (thermopile) that's the flame sensor with 2 wires coming off it, I don't know where the goofy name comes from. there will be one screw that has both, usually the top one. Wire accordingly. The new valves have a solenoid on the bottom. this connects to the high temp. sensor up top. It has 2 wires on it, one connects to the thermostat wire, the other goes to the screw with TH and TP. Or you can skip it and connect the wire from the back of the valve to the Th and TP screw. Make sure the thermostat wires aren't pinched somewhere, thus eliminating the thermostats control.

On your thermostat - R is the power in terminal. Y is the cooling out. W is the heating out. (G is fan out). It does not matter which wire goes to R, the other should go to W - if no heat with a call, the thermostat is bad.

You most likely do not have AC.
Red to R (24volts), White to W(heat).
Black(usually common), Orange(usually reversing valve for a heat pump, could be anything you want it to be as long as you wire it on both ends correctly), and Green (usually FAN) were buried, so they were never used.

Hello. The red and the black are the hot wires. Therefore, connect one of your conductors to the red and the other conductor to the black. Use wirenuts. The bare ground wire should be solidly attached to the new unit's green wire using a wire nut.
