Footpeddle only plugs in one way no way of reversing it. The machine when turned on and you press the peddle it goes into reverse. With machine off I can set it to run forwad and it will by hand. Only when you power on and start to sew it reversed. If you hit and hold the reverse button it will sew foward.

Ii is as though it is in reverse order. Could be something in the motherboard.

Thanks, I was trying to see if it could be something I am overlooking. If it is in the motherboard then to fix it the board will have to be replaced.

One that came with machine. foot switch is simple push to go and release to stop no other function.

You have a machine that is miswired. Possible locations the forward and reverse wires are swapped at either the reversing switch or at the motor.

How could the wires switch, the machine has not been opened that I know of. The person said it was runing properly and then the next time it was used it made a pop and started runing in reverse

It acts like it jumped time but I can not see any evidence that it is out of time by 180 Degree.

"Made a pop" is important to know. Try disconnecting the reversing switch, in case it has some welded contacts or broken plastic innards. Electronic control fault is less likely.

Are you using buttons on a footswitch or on the machine? If a footswitch, check to be sure the switch's cord is not plugged in upside-down. You might have to open it up and swap wires to the switches.

Machine will only sew in reverse

You wrote,
"Machine will only sew in reverse - Sewing Machines" A: I'm just a tinkerer, hobbyist, who did run across this same problem before. I can give a general non-model specific remedy based on my limited experience with mechanical sewing machines that get locked into sewing backwards, that is "they only want to sew in Reverse":

1. Verify what is the normal direction of the fly wheel in forward sewing for your machine. Most sewing machines, including Singers, always sew with the top of the flywheel moving toward the operator, regardless if sewing forward or backwards; but older friction-wheel White Rotary (RF) sewing machines, have the flywheel running in the opposite direction (top of Hand-Wheel turning away from the operator when sewing.

2. If it has Reverse Lever/Switch; check that it is in the correct position; if still only sews in reverse, change positions of the Direction Control lever (or Button, etc.), and see if it changes direction to correct the problem.

3. If this does not help, then jiggle the Reverse Lever and follow the linkage inside the machine and see if there is anything broken, loose or out of adjustment. Some machines have reverse control linkage elbows in the top part of machine, and by poor design are prone to accidentally pop backwards, causing sewing in the opposite direction of the position of the Reverse Lever/Button (Backwards when you want to sew Forward). On occasion, a Kenmore 158.1787180 got locked into the backwards sewing mode (the dog-gone' est thing), but by following and analyzing the linkage, I found where it was going wrong, and popped the indecisive linkage elbow back the way it was supposed to be and fixed it. [ I had more detailed notes, on this fix, but when I read them, without the machine in front of me, made no sense to me today so I can't share that till I revisit the conundrum again.]

4. If all else fails, you may be able to hold or clamp the Reverse Lever/Button in the Reverse position, so it sews Forward (I've done this before too (as a short-term fix) until I figured out how to adjust it back the way it was supposed to be.

5. If this post helped you, don't be afraid to indicate so, so Fixya will know. If it was useless, "ouch", but I'd like to know that too, so I'll be more selective on what I really know more about. I try to help, though this is probably a trade secret that anyone who knows is discrete about who they share the information with.
Sincerely

Sews in reverse and then forward when the reverse lever is pressed.

Incorrect polarity at the plug, or the drive belt is crossed into a figure 8 so it is running the wrong way.

You can also try pushing the knob the right way as you depress the pedal.

How to fix the machine when its sewing backwards

Refer to your instruction manual on Page 22, the reverse stitching control buttons are on the extreme upper left and the one below it.
To start the reverse stitching press the upper left button and to revert to forward stitching, press the second left button below it.

Singer 4166 suddenly started sewing only in reverse even when forward mode checked

open the top of the sewing machine. Then press the button or lever that changes the forward reverse mode. You may find that something got stuck there where it should effect the machine part. May a drop of oil on that spot can help?

Janome New Home mx3123 reverse button not working

1/28/13 - I have Janome Harmony 2049 that was initially sewing forward with no reverse and then after about 12 inches of sewing would ONLY sew in reverse. After spending an hour getting the plastic housing off...I was able to locate the shaft that made the reverse. It needed lubrication and after working it in and unjamming the part from the down position, the forward and reverse now work!
Huh, right? Hope it continues to work well. It is a smooth running machine, otherwise. Good luck!

Started sewing backwards now not moving material at all

Sounds like the machine's age is causing the lubrication to get sticky.

Try changing the pattern by moving the pattern selector around.

Take out the bobbin and remove the thread and presser foot, raise the presser lever, set the pattern to zig zag, set the stitch length to maximum and run the machine at full speed. While it's running, repeatedly press the reverse lever all the way down. Run it for at least a few minutes.
