Yes, the Kindle Paperwhite is nicely back lighted and is most excellent to read in the dark.

My kindle paper white stopped working. I can't read in the dark

Is it fully charged? You can try hard reset. Press and hold power button for 20-30 seconds. Release and you should see some flashing and the bar come up that says it's loading. Let it go on until it stops and then try using again. IF this does not work contact:

My Kindle Fire stays on, won't shut off and won't let me use it. It just displays the name on a dark background.,

Press and HOLD the power button for a FULL 40 seconds and then try to power back on. Be sure it is not plugged into a power source when you do this.

I charged my kindle, but can't get it to turn on

According to Love My Kindle Fire, nearly every Kindle owner will, at some point, need to learn how to "reset" their machine.
"When I hear (or read) these words from those who are experiencing a problem with their Kindle Fire it usually ends with something like, "turn on", "charge", or "work".

If suddenly your Kindle Fire won't work, then its most likely locked up. However, sometimes when it locks up, you can't tell because the screen goes dark (either gray or black). It just looks like it's off when in fact it is already one. cause the screen goes dark, either gray or black. It just looks like it's off when in fact your Kindle Fire is on but is stuck. When an electronic device locks up or freezes usually resetting it fixes the problem. Resetting your Kindle Fire is actually really easy, just hold down the power button for at least 20 seconds. .If your Kindle Fire won't turn on it's possible the battery went dead (if it was left "on" too long).
Plug in the power charger and wait about 15 minutes to make sure it gets enough charge, and then try turning it on again.
If it still won't turn on, try to reset the Kindle Fire again to be sure it's powered off.
If it still won't work, try someone else's charger, in case yours died.

How to unfreeze

You don't mention which kind but I think it's the same for all of them. Hold down the Power button for several seconds. It should go dark, probably flash a couple of times and when it comes back to the old wallpaper of boy sitting under tree, let power button go. You should see it go through the normal loading patterns like it's downloading info.

If this does not work contact Kindle help desk and let them know you tried a "Hard Reset". I have used this method for 3G and paperwhite models.

Try to hold the slide key for 15 sec. It will reboot your kindle. If black patch is not gone even after that, It's a hw issue. Screen might require to be changed. If it's in warranty Amazon will do it free. That's what i have heard.

On my Kindle 3 the screen presentation seems dull and lifless and does not encourage reading. I thought it would be closer to a written page in terms of being much less grey and more white. The screen is...

Please compare your display to this one:

If your display looks worse, you should contact Amazon Kindle support. This is the current state-of-the-art for E-Ink displays. In comparison, liquid crystal displays (LCD) have a slightly better contrast, but cannot show shades of gray at all, they need electricity all the time, and become much harder to read in brighter environments.

Make sure you have enough light while reading, I find it more comforting to the eyes.
