Question about Saeco Vienna SuperAutomatica Coffee Maker/Espresso Machine

1 Answer

Grinder doser door sometimes does not open, grinder times out and the grinds pile up above the doser door.

When I press the espresso button on my Saeco Vienna Superautomatica it grinds beans for some time and eventually times out. If I pull out the brew group and open the doser door the grinds are all piled up on top of the door and they all come spilling out. There is no blockage in the grinder or the chute that goes to the doser door, as I already disassembled the grinder and cleaned and vacuumed it out, and the grinds are clearly making it into the doser. The problem is intermittent, and if I operate the doser door manually a few times, put the brew group back in and try again it runs fine for a few shots. My guess is either some of the doser components need to be cleaned, or perhaps replaced. Cerini Coffee has a parts diagram of the doser on page 7: http://www.cerinicoffee.com/content/Diagrams/Saeco_Parts_Diagrams/Fully_Automatic/ViennaBlack.pdf I'm comfortable disassembling the machine as I've done it several times in the last 8 years to remove calcium blockages etc. Can someone suggest whether cleaning is worthwhile, or if these symptoms suggest that a part is failing such as the 1 solenoid, 7 microswitch, or whatever part 68 is?

Why my saeco royal not grinding?

hi,
pls try to describe what are the symptoms.
Grinder might be dead, or the doser switch may say that there's no need for grinding because it feels there is enough ground coffee.
I would clean the grinder completely, clean the doser from all ground coffee and give it a try and let me know.
Hope that helps.

Rancilio Rocky w/ doser: clean sweep of coffee grounds

The Rancilio Rocky coffee grinder is a superb, highly recommended machine, but its doser is pretty useless in the home. First reason: you want to grind coffee instants before you brew or pull your espresso shot; otherwise, the grinds just lose aromatics and flavor. The doser only works for multiple doses, so you're better off just grinding the amount you need each time. If you're buying a Rocky, get the doserless model.

If you have the doser model, like I do, you also find that the vanes which sweep the coffee into your portafilter or cone leave a layer of grounds on the doser floor. If not cleaned out, they turn rancid. There are coffee web sites with fairly complicated instructions on how to modify the vanes to do a clean sweep. Here's the simple way:

Flip up the doser cover, and spin the vanes while pressing your finger lightly on the outer top edge of one vane. The vanes have enough play so the pressure brings one into light contact with the doser floor, sweeping 99% of the grounds into your waiting portafilter.

HOW DO I CHANGE THE GRINDING MECHANISM ON MY SPIDEM TREVI EXCLUSSIVE ESPRESSO MACHINE. I HEAR THE MACHINE GRINDING BUT IT'S REALLY NOT DOING ANYTHING. ANY SUGGESTIONS

When the grinder spins free and fast it only means that fresh beans are not feeding into the burrs. This happens when:
1- Grind setting is too fine and beans cannot enter the grinder mechanism.
2- Use of oily dark roast beans can clog the ground coffee chamber and preven the fresh beans entering the grinder.
3- The ground coffee chamber outlet is clogged due to oily beans or too fine coffee setting.

When you cleaned the grinder you may not have cleaned the coffee outlet to the doser on the left. You can clean the outlet to open the passage of coffee grounds to collect in the dosing device..
After cleaning the outlet, you should next make sure that coffee grounds are not packed in the doser. The doser is inside the door right above the brew group.
To access the doser:
1- Remove water tank.
2- Remove the brew group.
3- Lay the machine on its back for full view of the doser.
4- Pull the doser door open (it is like an Attic door.
5- Keep the doser door open and clean the inside with a brush. The outlet from the grinder is on the right side with a wire wiper cleaner that moves across the grinder outlet fills from the grinder. This opening.
Use a brush to clean the doser.
On the left of the doser space there is a plastic flap that is pushed to the left when coffee grounds fill the doser.
At certain distance push back (1/4") the notch on top of the flap pushes the doser micro switch pin to stop the grinder. Push the flap gently to the left to make sure that it is moving well. With each push back of the flap, one can hear the feeble click sound from the micro switch.
When the above cleaning is done, try the grinding.
If the conical burrs have not been replaced for over 2500 grinds, it is time to do so.

The above grinder and grinder doser cleaning instructions are available as download files on the following page link:

One can find many useful maintenance guides on one page.
Good luck.

Our Saeco Vienna Superautomatica sounds like it's grinding beans but keeps running until the red 'bean' light comes on and we have to shut the machine off. Any suggestions?

The grinder is timing out and stops if the beans do not enter the grinder. This happens because:
1- The grinder outlet is clogged and fresh beans cannot pass through the burrs.
2- The grind setting is too fine and helping clogging in the grinding chamber or the ground coffee outlet.
3- Operator may have been using dark roast oily beans. Like it or not, the dark roast oily beans do not make stronger espresso. Please stop using such beans in fully automatic espresso machines.
4- The grinder has already made over 2000 grinds and the burrs are blunted and not grinding beans as needed.
To solve this malfunction, clean the grinder. Make sure the grinder outlet to the doser is cleaned. This outlet passage is about 2 inches or more. To clean it, lay the machine on its back (water tank side) to allow better view of cleaning the doser and the passage of coffee from the grinder to the doser. Use the link below to find instructions for cleaning the grinder and replace the burrs.

The grinder stoped grinding coffee

many grinders have resetable termic fuse, some of them require manual reset, so you should search for termic fuse attached to body of motor(open the grinder from bottom) usualy they are round black termofuses with red reset button.
usualy this happenes when we have loud music and we dont hear that grinder is on and he works long time.

My Saeco magic deluxe needed the circuits relaoded. I followed the intructions and now my machine tamps first and then grinds the beans leaving me with weak coffee can anyone solve this for me ?

try this.

hit the external dosage button. Its the button on the top middle that controls when you want to put grinds in from the external shoot.

Do not place any coffee in there. then just press the normal brew button. it should brew more or less a cup of water.

then try brewing a coffee like normal and see if the problem fixes.

this happens because there is a little door in the grinder that hits a microswitch that tells the grinder to stop grinding.

This is supposed to happen when the grinder fills the brew group enough to click the microswitch.

Sometimes it does reverse itself like this.

The only other solution would be to open the grinder up and vaccum all grounds out and vaccum the grind shaft above the brew group on the side.

This will cause the door to go back to normal position.

If it doesn't work after that, the door or microswitch has gone faulty. But that is an extremely rare situation.

Hope this helps.

Ginding problems, all clogged up

Follow these instructions to put grinder back together...

Items needed to clean grinder
1- #2 Phillips head screw driver
1 Cleaning brush
Prep:
Remove all beans from the bean hopper, vacuum out any
beans that cannot be scooped out by hand.
Remove the front and back screws and pull off bean hopper
container from the machine. (Note: The rear screw is longer
than the front screw.)
Note: Doser adjustment knob is available only on Vienna
Digital and Vienna Deluxe Rapid Steam.
Place screws in a safe place so that they will not be lost.
Cleaning the Grinder Viennas

front screw

knob
Before beginning to clean the grinder please be sure to turn the machine off and unplug it from the wall
socket. Grinder Tip: Using an oily bean will cause the coffee to build up quickly and clog the grinder.
Saeco recommends using a medium to dark colored bean that is not oily.
After cleaning the grinder and then brewing a cup of coffee it may take 2-3 grinding cycles for the machine
to dispense coffee.
Step 1:
Remove the black rubber gasket, then vacuum additional beans or grinds from the grinder area (Fig. 1).
Rotate the outer ring of the grinder counter-clockwise until the red line is at the 12 o'clock position (as
viewed from the front of the machine) or until the red line on the outer ring is 180º from the opposite red
line on inner burr ring (Fig. 2).
Lift the inner burr ring out of the assembly (Fig. 3).
Figure 1 Figure 2 Figure 3
Step 2:
Vacuum out any residual grinds from inside the grinder and clean the grinder burrs using the cleaning
brush (Fig. 5). Clean out the grinder coffee chute using the end of the cleaning brush (Fig. 5).
Remove the drip tray, open the service door, remove the dregdrawer and brew group. Gently pull
down the coffee doser door and brush out any ground coffee that may be inside the chute (Fig. 6).
Reassembly:
Be sure that the red line on the outer ring is still in the 12 o'clock position. Place the inner burr ring back
into the grinder making sure the red line on the inner burr is at the 6 o'clock position or 180º opposite from
the red line on the outer ring (Fig. 2). Once the inner burr ring is in place, rotate the outer ring clockwise
until it will not turn any further. At this time the two red lines should be aligned. The grinder is now at the
"0" position. Replace black round rubber gasket (Fig. 7).
Take the bean hopper container and rotate the grinder adjustment wheel to zero (0) (Fig. 8) and the doser
adjustment knob to the minus symbol (-) (Fig. 9). Slide the doser adjustment gear toward the left of the
machine until it stops. (Note: The Vienna Black does not have a doser adjustment knob. Only the Vienna
Digital & Vienna Deluxe Rapid Steam have a doser adjustment wheel.)
Reinstall the bean hopper container being sure to use the LONG screw in the back, then replace the finger
guard using the short screw in the front of the container. Once the bean hopper container has been
reinstalled, rotate each knob through the full range of motion. The grinder knob should rotate from (0) to
(18) and back, and the doser knob from the minus symbol (-) to plus symbol (+) and back.
Place the grinder adjustment knob at the eight (8) position and place the doser knob at the halfway
point between the plus symbol (+) and the minus symbol (-) symbol, or to your preferred settings.

Ground coffee Saeco Royal

Hi
thedalys. you probably have a bad micro switch on your doser. and that just needs to be replaced. If the grinder does not sense that the doser box is full it will keep grinding until it times out.

Guest. Try pulling the dosage lever back one click from the full and push your grind lever to the largest # and see if that helps. Sounds like you grinds are too fine and its clogging the the grind box. If the dosage level is too full it will cycle and dump the brew unit or break the brew drive gears, then you will hear a clicking noise when it trys to make a coffee.

Bean hopper is full, grinder is grinding...but NO COFFEE!

Sometimes the chamber between the grinder and brewer will clog up. Try: Open the grind all the way up to the highest number. Push the grind button and while grinding move the dose knob (the one with the + - sign toward minus. If it does not kick in and dose try it again. If it does take off then leave it on the high number for 3 coffees. Then while the grinder is turning move the two knobs back to whre they were. If this does not work you can reomve the brew unit and right above where it sits in the machine there is a trap door that you can open. Open it and shove someting like a straw up toward the grinder and you should get a bunch of grounds droppiing down. Then try the above procedure a couple more times. If this does not work you may need to google "Saeco repair" and send it to an authorized repair center.
