Question about GE Refrigerators

Fresh food section is freezing on all temp settings in my GE refrigerator, what can I do?

My GE fridge is freezing my fresh foods. It doesn't matter what temp you set the freezer or fridge at. It seems like cold air is always blowing into the fridge from the freezer.

Thermostat is not working. Does the compressor ever shut off?

would that be the temperature sensor? There is no thermostat on the parts list.

With electronic controls, could be almost anything.

Thank you. I ordered the temp sensor, hopefully that will fix it

My mom's be had same issue. As I was getting ready to buy her a new refrigerator, she had a power outage for about 2 hrs. Anyway, after power came back on, she noticed that the refridgerator was back to working properly. So u might try unplugging it for a short while and see if that resets the control board like it did accidentally for my mom.

Sorry, I eventually dumped the ge and got my mom an lg. She loves it. Even tho the ge was a profile, it was a constant problem about something. Ge is just not the ge of old. Good luck.

Our fridge seems to work like a freezer no matter what setting is on, is this a known problem? The model is a Gorenje fridge/freezer model: HZOS 3366

Hello Nick;

My name is Peter. I am a retired field service refrigeration technician.

I assume you are from the United Kingdom based on your unit. I am from Baltimore, Maryland, USA.

Yes, this is a common problem and a simple one to fix. Your only cooling source is from your freezer. There is a vent from your freezer that blows cool air into your fresh food section. This vent is probably motorized and controlled by a temperature sensor in your fresh food section. Either the vent assembly is bad and stuck open or you have a bad fresh food section temperature sensor..

Temp fix: With tape or cotton balls or something locate the air vent to your fresh food section and block at least 1/2 of the air flow vent ports to your fresh food section.

What can I try next to prevent my food from freezing?

The damper door may be broken. I had this problem in the past and the fresh food was too cold. I replaced the damper assembly and all was fixed.

My refrigerator is too cold and is freezing my food

Hello,

Most times this is a bad cold control, but there are other things to check for. Make sure the condenser fan is working and the coils are not covered with dust. A separated heat exchanger ( small capillary tubing soldered to the large suction line ) can separate from one another and make the fridge run too long. - tape tubing back together. A poor working evaporator fan motor could also make the fridge run too long and freeze - replace the fan motor. An inefficient compressor or refrigeration system could make the fridge run too long and freeze - have a service tech check this out. A misaligned control settings, make sure the air damper and cold control have not been bumped and are out of normal settings. Stuck open air diffusers or air dampers are becoming more and more common for allowing too much air to be blown into the fresh food section and freezing things. On all frost free fridge's the freezer temp air is blown into the fresh food section, if you have "easy" to freeze items ( eggs, veggies in water, etc ) in front of or under where the freezer temp air comes out, they could freeze - store them in a different spot. Doors not closing properly making the fridge run too long is something else to check for the plastic air deflector at the top rear of the frig had been knocked off. I replaced it and all is OK. I thought you might add this to your suggestion list. As you know, the deflector directs the freezer air toward the front of the frig and the rear of the cold control, which is now functioning properly. Luckily, I found this before rushing out to purchase the control

Hope this helps.....

Not cooling properly

Hello,

First thing- set the controls at the mid range of their settings. Next, check the coils under the fridge to see if they are clogged with dust, etc. Next, using a couple stem thermometers, determine the temps in the freezer and fresh food sections. In the fresh food section, place a tall glass of water on a shelf in the middle, put the thermometer in and let it set for awhile in the fridge. Inside the fresh food section, look for the damper opening at the top of the wall in between the two sections. Wet the back of your fingers- can you feel air blowing through the damper opening? Inside the freezer section, look at the back wall- any frost buildup there.

Hope this help.....

Too cold

If the unit seems to be running non stop, you may have a bad cold temp control. If you have ice cream in freezer, it will likely be rock hard, that you need a chisel to scoop. if your ice cream is ok, its likely not the temp control. On your GE, in the fresh food section, do you have a canopy on the ceiling of fridge, and likely covers the whole top back portion of your fridge? If you do, there is a damper door inside, that breaks off its hinge, and stays wide open, allowing cold air from freezer to constantly be pulled into fridge, freezing food. If you do have this canopy, it will need to be replaced, as you cannot reattach the damper to its hinge.

The coils on my ge gss22wgpd bb side by side keep freezing up . IU can defrost them manually and the freezer and fridge work fine again.

This has happened in my GE side-by-side (model GSS20IEMDWW). For me, the problem was caused by a faulty temp sensor in the fresh food side. That sensor never signalled the computer that the temp in the fresh food side was cool enough, so the compressor ran constantly.

Since the compressor was running constantly, the evaporator coils (back wall of the freezer compartment) eventually iced over (took about a week). Since the fan that draws air over the evaporator coils could no longer move any air (due to the icing), the temperature in the fresh food side continued to climb. (The fresh food side is chilled through a hole with a motorized door at the top of the dividing wall, so if no air is moving in the freezer compartment, temps in the fresh food compartment climb.)

I replaced the temp sensor in the fresh food side and solved the problem for a while. About six months later I had the same problem again, so I replaced both temp sensors in the freezer compartment - which solved the problem again. (My fridge is about seven years old.)

If you are going to replace any of the temp sensors, replace them all under the principle of "if one failed, the rest will soon fail too".

This site has schematics of various appliances, including the model number you provided...
http://www.partselect.com/AdvancedModelSearch.aspx?ModelNum=GSS22WGPDBB&mfgModelNum=&fkMfgID=2

Your model appears very similar to mine - in the "Fresh Food Shelves" section of the above site, the sensor is diagram number 242. In the "Freezer Section", the sensors are diagram number 241 and 243.

Fresh food section not maintaining cold temp

You're frozen up.  Defrost completely.  Then, clean your condenser.  Make sure to never leave open containers in the fridge...water condenses into ice.  If you still have problems, you may be low on gas.
