Keep thread stood up in a coffee mug or on stand behind machine...take thread up to the spool holder and lead in front then to first tension. I find at high speed it pulls the thread from the machine thread holder too erratically and causes too much followed by too little tension. Standing the spool on table prevents this from happening.

Practice, practice, practice. Even when you are watching TV, have a pad of paper with a pencil and draw. Practice drawing smoothly and consistently. Then practice doing the same on your machine with scrap fabric and batting (make a sandwich just like you would with your quilt). Practice, practice, practice. The more you practice, the better you will get. It takes about 60 times doing a design for your brain and your hands to coordinate together. But, when you change designs, you'll have to practice again.

1. Set up for regular sewing (not embroidery).
2. Adjust the tension of the bobbin and the top thread so that you have a nice straight stitch.
3. Check your thread quality. Is it fuzzy or have small trails sticking out. No Walmart thread allowed. Only top notch embroidery thread allowed.
4. When you've been successful with the thread and tension go ahead and set up for free arm.
5. Sew free arm but remember machine has to keep up with you. If you go too fast you will be pulling the thread and probably will break the thread.
6. Your erratic stitch is caused by the speed at which you are moving the hoop. Going fast; then slow is going to make a long stitch and then a short stitch, etc.

My mother owns a janome mystyle 16 and i am trying to sew projects however the fabric is not being pulled through. please help me.

With any sewing machine if there's a feed problem it usually means the feed dogs or the foot pressure need to be cleaned / adjusted. You can download a Janome 16 Manual here: http://janome.com/siteassets/support/manuals/economy-models/inst-book-7318-english.pdf

My Janome Mystyle 16 keeps skipping stitches, how do I fix it?

Skipped stitches

1. The needle is not inserted correctly

Remove needle & reinsert needle( flat side towards the back of machine)

2. The needle is damaged

replace with new needle

3. The wrong size needle is being used

Choose a needle to suit the thread & fabric

4. The foot not attached correctly

Check & attach correctly

I have a Janome 1600P DBX. The needle is installed correctly but the thread on top keeps breaking or skipping stitchings while free motion quilting? the quilt shop says it is not out of time. I have...

Is it a new needle? a dull needle or one with a burr on it can cause those problems that you mention. The kind of needle you use is also very important. I like to use a 70/10 or 80/12 jeans needle depending on how thick the thread is.

Thread keeps breaking

Have you checked any edge the thread might contact for knicks which should be files or sanded down? Also, I had to replace my bobbin case after a number of years as it had kind of stretched out and allowed my bobbin to pop around and consequently broke many threads.
