Question about Gcv160 Gas Engine

1 Answer

This is an update on my lawnmower. Following various instructions. It looks as if the engine has seized.

I have done various things like emptying the contaminated oil and replenishing with new. I have taken the spark plug out and tipped the whole machine on its end with no oil in whatsoever to see if any petrol came out of the spark plug hole. Nothing came out. When I initially noticed fuel coming through the filter and exhaust when it was turned off, the pull moved freely, however it doesn't now. Today after its been sitting overnight with penetrating oil been liberally dispensed in the spark plug hole, the pull, does on occasion, if you keep pulling, free itself momentarily further than it did yesterday, but then it goes back to where it was before. To be honest I cannot believe that a sticking float can cause such catastrophic damage to an engine. Surely there should be a cut off valve on the carb when too much fuel is pushed through, but what do I know, I am just a woman who is extremely anger that something so simple has cost me a lot of money. I wouldn't mind if it had never been serviced but it is regularly. My neighbour never services his mower and guess what, yes you've got it, it works like a charm, so perhaps there is a lesson to be learnt there!! I would like to thank everyone for their input but alas it has all been in vain, and a five hundred pound mower has just died. Julie

No I have only put penetrating oil in the spark plug hole not ordinary oil. I was advised to do this to lubricate the pistons if they had seized. I cannot turn the blade but I could initially albeit slightly. It is frozen solid now. Basically I think it is dead. Strangely when I first noticed fule through the filter the pull, pulled easily it has only been since I left it standing while I got the carb off and back together that it froze. Not very happy as you can imagine.m I have tired virually everything apart from strippihng the thing down and I am not qualified to do that.

I'm not sure I understand, but if you put oil in the cylinder and reinstalled the spark plug with it still in there...That's why your engine acts like it's frozen up. If that's the case, remove the spark plug and pull the start rope until the oil stops coming out when you pull it. You might want to even spray some carb cleaner in the spark plug hole, let it set for a couple of minutes and pull the rope until nothing comes out the spark plug hole.
Also, with the plug removed, tip the mower and see if you an turn the blade. If you can, the engine is not frozen. You may need to clean the oil off the spark plug as well.
Good luck! I hope I helped some,
Bill

Thanks for your help but I put penetrating oil in the spark plug hole not ordinary oil so Icould libricate the pistons. Following me findikng fuel leaking out the filter the pull moved freely it was only when I got the carb back on that I noticed I couldn't pull the cord and that was in a matter of a couple of hours. The blade did rotate slightly but not now. It is basically seized solid but I cannot understand why no petrol came out of the spark plug hole when I tipped the machine up and the spark plug hole was facing down. It is basically sezied the engine. I dare say if I got it apart I could free it up but I am not qualified. Thanks anyway.

Hi Bill, well ikn my husband's aresenal there is some penetrating oil so I have now put the carb back on and tipped the machine up having drained all the oil out of it and petrol and squirted about fifteen sprays of penetrating oil into the spark plug hole. Fingers crossed that this may help. I shall leave it proably for 24 hrs maybe more and see if it has alleviated the problem. I may squirt some more into the hole tomorrow. The frenchman I spoke to was bewildered that fuel leakage from the filter and exhuast could seize the engine. He looked surprised and wanted to see it. Probably saw euro signs. I will let you know how I get on. I will try and ease the blade tomorrow evening and go from there. To be honest in my wildest dreams I never thought that the engine could be damaged from something so simple. Have a good weekend and Easter. Julie

Oh I think BLASTED is definitely an American thing. In the UK we have a thing called Screwfix and they sell such things but not here in good old France.

Backpack gas blower

Monching, You will have to hope there is not too much damage done already from running straight Gas. Empty all straight gas from blowers tank and refill with proper minimum 50:1 gas oil mix. Start blower and run on 1/2 throttle for a few minutes to be sure its going to be OK. If seized, you will have to try and unseize and if lucky it may run if not too much damage internally. You should run a heavier oil to gas mix 32 or 40:1 in an engine that's been seized. Check the attached links, instruction and guides, Good luck

How to install throttle control spring on Honda GVARA lawnmower engine

There should be an empty hole in the throttle lever that one end of the spring goes into. The other end is attached to a stationary post directly in line with the throttle lever. Hook the spring in the throttle lever first and look for something to hook the other end on, probably in the direction away from the engine.

Try to pull cord but seems seized on my self propelled lawnmower

Look underneath at your blade - it could be bent and hanging up. If not, remove spark plug and try to pull starter cord. If it won't move then you may have seized the motor and a new mower may be in order.
Hope this helps!!

To update to the latest requires buying a map update. Too expensive in my book. Garmin does have a POI loader utility that you can get at their site. Various web sites have POI listings that can then be installed. You can also find individual POI listings for such things as all Walmarts at a company's web site.
