Re: Dell 4600

We need to know exactly what the problem is. check on the back of the computer. right above the ports where you plugin a PS/2 mouse there are 4 led lights there. if the last combination it will give are all green then this is a video problem. the lights on the back are actually diagnostic led lights. it would help us a lot to figure out whats wrong with the computer using the combination of those lights. however, if the capslock key doesnt respond at all when pressed that it could be the mobo.

please let me know if you have any other questions

DSL Connection is not working.. The DSL green light on the Speedtouch box is continuously flashing..? help please

If the DSL light on the modem is flashing it most likely indicates a problem with the DSL connection. Check with your ISP.

The light on my hard drive is yellow rather than green and my computer will not turn on.

Ordinarily yellow light indicates ACPI standby. On some Dell and HP motherboards the same light also indicates a CPU failure, usually due to overvoltage or overheating.

Turn the PC completely off (unplug from the wall socket). Open the side, so you can see the motherboard with CPU and heat block. Best if you wait some ten-twenty minutes. Plug the power cable and power on the PC. Does it turn on, and does the CPU fan rotate correctly? If the PC turns on, and the fan doesn't, you have a busted fan which needs replacing.

If this doesn't solve the issue, describe exactly how the error happened. Is it a new PC, a PC which already worked and stopped doing so, a DIY assembled machine? Does it never turn on, or does it sometime do?

Computer will not turn on by outside push button. When it is plugged in and looking at the motherboard there is one green light on the board and thats it,if I push the test button on the power supply a red...

You can remove components from the pc and try to switch it on and see if it works.

eg.I would try a different power supply.
Then try different ram,
Then disconnect the Harddrive

If when you remove a component the pc starts, it's that component thats the problem

Dell Dimension 2400 motherboard

Do you hear any beeping sound upon booting up the computer? do you hear any HD activity happening? or is the unit totally just halts to that?

I checked the specifications of your board and it seems ok (socket 478, DDR400)

Based from the symptoms you mentioned, I could easily assume that you have a problem with the board or the CPU but just to be sure, I suggest that you proceed on isloating the problem.

To do this, I suggest that you remove the HD, CD/DVD, floppy connections and any adapters cards (if any) that you have installed on the board (sound, lan etc.), as for the video, I believe your board has a built in video but having, you can use that instead. From there you check the major components:

Power: check Power supply fan, CPU fan, lights - since you getting lights already and I guess your fans are all ok, we could skip this part.

make sure that the CPU (+heatsink andfan) and memories are properly seated.

try swapping a known working ram module, if you have multiple ram modules, try using one module at a time, or you can remove all of them, anyway if its a memory problem, your PC should send out error beep codes to tell you about it. however, if nothing still happens, it means that your PC isn't processing anything, you'll have to isolate if its the board that you just bought or your CPU that is causing the problem, try reseting the board's BIOS through the reset jumper to make sure that it reverts back to factory on which are commoly set to automatically detect CPU voltage and ram speed, also you can try swapping another CPU or board if possible. You might end up replacing the new board or have it tested from where you bought it (you can perhaps bring the CPU and memory with you for the later part). Hope this helps

Cheers and best regards,

PC not starting

Sure hate saying this but your dell 4400 board is the trouble.
Just finished reading a bunch of post. Double check Dell's web site too. No lights lit on the back of the PC means no power & the green led you see on the board is telling you that the board has power.
Seems your not the only person with the same problem as with other 4400 owners.
One user called dell & stated the problem he had, (just like your problem), to the letter. Dell admitted there is a problem with the 4400's. mainboard. Dell does not go out & replace every board. They, like every company wait till someone has this type of problem & contacts the Mfg. Your 4400 was made back in what 2003 - 2004. If Dell still supplies your board the best they'll do is sell you a refurbished board.
I think your better off buying a new board & fitting into your Dell case. You can try to find a board that will run your current componets.
This is dell's web site link for the dell 4400.

Good luck & thanks for coming to FixYa.

Ensure that you got the cpu fan connected to the correct place, the board has 2 one for the cpu fan andt the other for a system controlled case fan.

If that dont work check to see you got the power supply connected to the board propperly, there is a seperate 4 pin connector using 2 yellow and 2 black wires ensure it is correct.

Check your power supply

unplug the power supply and bridge the green wire with the black one next to it to see if it comes on. OR JUST CHANGE THE POWER SUPPLY TO SEE IF IT WORKS.
