I know this will sound crazy. But while its sitting there with the black screen... and IF you have a function key to put the computer to sleep... do that. Then wait till the computer has gone to sleep, and hit one of the shift keys to wake it back up.

I manage more than 20 computers, most running Windows 8. Only one of the computers does the black screen thing, and this is how I get past it. Has worked every time for several months.

I tried to use an NTI Echo 3 cloning disk to upgrade my hd to a larger one. But, now the computer is stuck. I cannot get it past the attempt to start cloning after restart.

tell what you are cloning
is the w10 running prefect or did it die and now you are cloning dead to new. fail, you can not clone dead to dead OS.
nor infected. nor bad hdd to new HDD. fail.

or what?
no pc stated, is this SATA to SATA clone.
try faststone clone for free? it works.

cloning only works perfect to prefect.
do not clone backwards or you clone blank to good leaving you
2 blank disks. (fast mode)

My hp reaches the factory image restor and the gets to 1% and stops says no image

since you pushed the F11 key to do HP restore right? or from CD's you never say restore medium.
there are only 2 or 3 causes of this, (or the pc is sick)
the HDD is bad.
the HDD was slammed
or the HDD was infected it wrecked the restore paritition
run the HDD TESTS IN BIOS yet.
if that passes then it was slammed. (or infected)
if PC came with XP and someone upgraded to w7 using the fresh load method that kills the original restore dead.
i cant guess what you have, not possible. at all from 1984 to now.

if the HDD tests pass.
then the HP install media works
F11 works if and only if the PC was not slammed.
slamming means the C:/HP_recovery partition was wrecked.
via many many ways.

I have a dell optiplex GS260. It comes on to the a black screen stating windows is unable to start properly, the options are to start in safe mode, with command prompt, last known working config + start...

Did you boot from disc by pressing F12 when you see the logo and select boot from CD? I would suggest you to enter system setup by pressing F2 and check which one is the option choose for your hard disk or HDD if it displays like that. Make sure it says single SATA or IDE disk. If you are not sure where to see, you may choose to restore the default setting of BIOS there. Then reboot. If the problem persists, you can plug the hard disk to another computer and backup the data. I don't see any restore to factory default option for this model. So you can format this hard disk on another machine after the backup and then reinstall the operating sytem using your disc. Try to boot with F12 and choose boot from CD then reinstall it from the scratch. Quicker than check all the details.
Here is a link where you can see which drivers to download from Dell's web site.

When I turn on the 1525 Dell laptop...a screen comes up saying windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt.windowssystem32configsystem. The page then suggests attempt to repair...

it is nothing but windows registry error. do one thing in another pc download the Hiren's boot cd from internet, write that file in a cd, try to boot from that cd & repair the registry. otherwise just format the operating system & reload the OS.

HP Pavillion dv2500 laptop will not boot up.

Pressing the f8 key doesn't work either? This should boot the laptop to safe mode, if it doesn't then check the memory cards before you do anything else, try to get somebody with the same type of memory card to lend it to you. If that doesn't work, then your HDD is corrupted, and to re-install Windows.
