How do I adjust a manual choke?

A manual choke utilizes a lever and cable assembly to open and close the choke plate. If your mower has the manual set up check the adjustment by pushing the lever to the stop in one direction. The choke plate should be either all the way open or all the way closed. If not check the cable hold down clamp, there is a retaining screw that holds a small clamp over the cable to hold the cable housing in place. Now if the choke is not adjusted properly then watch to see which way is not going full motion. Then loosen the retaining screw and slide the housing one way or the other to achieve either full open or full close and retighten the retaining screw. Now remove the spark plug and look at the electrode end and see what color the porcelain is, if it is black then it needs to be replaced or cleaned. If it is white then there is not enough fuel and the engine requires more choke to draw more fuel when the engine is cold, remember that after the engine starts and warms up to open the choke so it does not flood the engine - you will see black exhaust qnd the engine will not run smooth,

Carbeurator problems

Cold starting problems from a carbureted engine? Bet if you get your choke adjusted right, it will solve it. If you can screech the tires, this Tercel may be worth saving!
Just get a mechanic friend or pay someone to fix the choke. Doesn't take a long time if you know how. If you've never adjusted or worked on one, it's not so fun. Hard to explain too. The choke plate or flap should be almost closed completely when starting. Soon as engine is cranked or running, the plate should open a small amount more, but still nearly closed. Then as engine warms, the plate should gradually open until it is completely open after about 5-10 minutes. The choke cuts off the air supply to the engine. A cold engine needs a richer gas mixture to run good, and most importantly to start easy.

When I start my pressure washer on full choke it works fine when I place choke in wide open position gas runs out of the carburetor.what could be wrong.the engine issas by Briggs and Stratton.

You need to take the float bowl off the carb from the bottom . You haven't given a lot of information about who did what to the carburator but somebody must have screwed with the float pisition for this to be happening . The way all carburtors work is the same you have the float bowl and the floats and on top of the floats is a valve called the needle valve. Now the neddle valve is there to stop the flow of fuel into the float bowl when the engine is not in a high damand cycle for fuel like start up or ideal the choke shuts the air off and gives more fuel at start up .However when the engine is running and the float bowl is being filled by gravity feed from the gas tank the floats will move up do to the amount of fuel in the float bowl and should shut the fuel from the gas tank off to the float bowl until the engine can burn the fuel and drop the float level enough to make the neddle valve open again to supply more fuel for the engine to run correctly its a never ending cycle . You need to adjust the floats and likely clean the carburator don't mess with adjustments there mostly automatic when the engine is running

Won't start when cold

hello wyatt...... Is your jag.built with a carburetor or fuel injected?
Carb, your choke is not set to close when cold, and should be set. When set, it also sets a cam that keeps the engine running fast. Then when warm, you hit the pedal and the cam moves, and the engine speed goes to normal. Unless the choke is set, the engine cannot keep running, as it tries to run on cold gas and it can't run good on cold gas. It needs more gas, therefore, and the choke makes more gas go into the engine.

Fuel Injected, the computer should adjust the amount of gas your car is getting when cold. If not, the coolant sensor might be bad.
The coolant sensor senses the cold engine and tells the computer to add more gas. Once the engine is warm, the coolant sensor tells the computer to put the gas to normal.
So, if the sensor is not working, the engine will try to run normal, and if cold, it can't. Joe Thanks for choosing Fixya!

When starting mower, the choke resist opening and the engine coughs and sput gas out of the muffler. If I manually open choke, the engine comes up to operating speed and once warmed up, choke remains open...

I'm not sure this will be of any help, however, try spraying WD40 on the choke butterfly. It may be a little sticky from varnish from old gas. Be sure the butterfly is moving freely.

2001 mercedes c240 has a really rough start but when the car almost dies I turn the car off wait 3 seconds and it starts perfect. Next comes the issue with having to warm it up before driving anywhere...

Gasoline- thank you. Warm up is not an issue like diesel is. Sounds like the choke is is either wide open or over choking. With the engine cold, remove the air cleaner and note where the plate is at the opening of the carb. If it is wide open then without touching anything else and engine not running, step down on the gas pedal and see if the choke plate reset itself to restricter the carb inlet. If it didn't, then take some WD 40 and spray the linkages and the rod ends holdin the choke plate.By hand work the plate and linkage holding the gas open at the carb. Then set the plate to wide open and do the gas pedal thing agan to see if choke sets itself back to restricting the carb intake. If it does, start the engine and as the engine warms upm the choke plate should start opening on its own and you are off and running. Roitine question. Is your air cleaner clean? If the choke plate needs adjusting. get back to me. K? Good luck Remember to press the gas pedal down once before cranking. That sets the choke for cold start. Hope this helped you Good luck Note, the WD40 won't hurt anything but avoid spraying with engine running or when engine is hot..

Engine cutting out with the choke off

Adjust your idle screw on your carb so that it gets more gas just sitting there at idle. Tighten the screw one and a quarter turn and then start the bike. Adjust the idle to where you think it sounds normal. If that doesnt work check your float in your float bowl, it might be stuck in the down position. Clean with some carb cleaner spray and make sure it moves freely before putting the float bowl back on, youll have to choke it or prime the carb again to get it started. All the choke does is let in more gas and oxegen so you might want to check how far the carbs close when you push the choke back in. Is it impeading any normal carb setting. Check that too. Good luck.
