Check the fuel filter. If it is mostly clogged, you will get fuel through, but not fast enough to keep going.

If it is pretty old, the fuel lines might be ruined by ethanol in the gas. The inside of the old rubber lines looks like the rubber has melted. New fuel lines are made of material that is resistant to ethanol. Anyway, fuel should flow like water in a pipe. If it is sluggish at all, replace them.

Clean the carburetor. It sounds like the float is not moving right. It runs out of gas and doesn't refill right away. After it sits for a few minutes, it slowly refills, then you can go again for a short time. This is a shot in the dark for this problem, but I have solved 90% of running problems by just doing a quick carburetor cleaning.

How do I cure vapor lock?

If you're getting vapor lock, the bike will die after a few miles, and not restart for several minutes.
If the bike dies, immediately remove the gas cap and see if the bike will restart right away.
You could also ride it without the gas cap (try it on a tank that's 1/4-1/2 full, NOT fully full, because of gas splash) and see if it doesn't die after a few miles.

I had this same problem. Make sure fuel Cap is not too tight. There is three grooves on the backside of cap to let air in tank but if you tighten cap to hard it crushes these grooves to a tight seal. When vacuum in tank finally reaches same level as carburator suction then fuel flow stops and engine dies. When putting gas cap on just give it a spin and then maybe a 1/4 turn just to snug it. Next time it stalls take gas cap off and you should not hear air gushing in. If you do your cap was too tight and it will now start right-up.

check your gas tank cap, it is vented, if it gets clogged up fuel will not flow properly and engine dies of fuel starvation. By waiting a few minutes you have allowed the pressure to equalize in the tank enough to get enough fuel for engine to run.

Gas Cap. Sounds like the vent in the gas cap is stopped up. As the fuel flows out of the tank, a slight vacuum builds up. When the vacuum gets high enough, no fuel flow, engine dies. Let it sit for a minute or two, you get to go through the whole thing again. Kinda like the movie "Ground Hog Day". Try loosening the cap and going for a ride and see if that helps. Don't have the tank completely full. You don't want a lap full of gasoline. That could get uncomfortable fast. Oh yeah, I wouldn't advise smoking either or you'll look like the "Ghost Rider".

If you're running a fuel filter inline, this could be a problem as well. If you've gotten hold to some nasty gas, it could have your fuel filter nearly stopped up.

Also, you're bike is equipped with a vacuum operated petcock. The vacuum from the engine opens the petcock. I've seen lots of these petcocks fail. Check it with a hand operated vacuum pump or replace it with a pre-1994 model. I like Pingle petcocks the best.

Mower dies after running for a few minutes

It sounds like the carburetor is running out of fuel.First make sure the tank is full then loosen or remove the gas cap when it starts sputtering to see if that corrects the problem. Then with engine off remove the fuel line that goes from the tank to the fuel pump, hold it low and see if any fuel flows out of it,if not lightly blow air backwards to the tank,(with fuel cap off),then see if the line is plugged. Next remove the fuel line that goes to carburetor from the fuel pump, crank the engine and see if any fuel flows,if so the carburetor should be cleaned by removing it and disassembling it.
