Question about Washing Machines

1 Answer

Program selector is not working properly

It's like pick and mix as to which program I get, sometimes have to put it back through a spin. Sometimes when I select it goes to 15 mins and have to keep trying. There is a leak coming from underneath and now no longer feeds comfort through but this is not blocked? Is it worth repair or should I buy new?

SOURCE: stuck in wash cycle

check if heating by putting on as hot wash and feeling the door. if no heat, check continuity thro the heater - modern heaters have a non-resettable cut-out in them which can cause problems. no heat then no program advance

SOURCE: washer sometimes leaks from the bottom.

If this is a Kenmore top loader such as the one you have this question posted under, you must remove the exterior washer case to access the internal components. This will give you a better perspective on where any leak may be coming from. Just follow these steps:

1. Unplug washing machine.

2. Remove console. This can be accomplished in one of two ways depending on which type of console you have.

a. If the console has removable end caps, the caps lift off by prying on the top from the back of the washer. The cap will pull off towards you as you are facing the unit from the front of the washer. There will be a screw under each end cap that you will need to remove.

b. If the console does not have removable end caps, you will need to slide a putty knife under the front corner of each side and push in while lifting up. There is a retaining clip under each side that has to be released.

3. Once the console has been released it will lift up and fold back over the back of the washer in its resting position. Use care not to stress the small plastic hinges that hold it on. They can break easily.

4. Under the console will be two large brass colored clips. Take a large flat blade screwdriver and place it in the groove of the clip on the washer top. With the screwdriver firmly in the groove, push away from you towards the back of the washer. This will release the clips.

5. Disconnect the lid switch connector plug. This is the white colored plug on the washer top under the console.

6. Remove the washer casing. Open the lid of the washer. Using one hand, grip under the front rim of the washer opening. Do not grab the wash tub, just the casing. Tilt the washer case from the back first towards you, slide forward slightly, and then lift up. The entire case comes off exposing the wash tub and components.

If the leak is coming from the front of the washer, most commonly this is caused by a leaking drain pump. The pump is located in the front directly below the wash tub. The pump is not serviceable and must be replaced if it is damaged.

Some other items to consider:

1. Check your fill hoses to ensure they are tight and not leaking. What can often appear as a washer problem, may be a loose hose.

2. With the washer case removed, check the area UNDER the wash tub. If the leak is coming from the center above the transmission, the tub seal may be leaking.

3. Inspect the wash tub for any cracks. If the tub is cracked and its not serious, you may be able to get by with some marine epoxy to reseal it. If the crack is significant, a new tub will be required.

4. If the water is gushing out of the bottom of the washer, check the air dome on the lower right hand side of the wash tub. This is a small plastic air hose that runs from the wash tub all the way to the pressure switch. If this hose comes loose, the washer will start to leak as it fills. Simply reattach if it comes loose.

NOTE: The ends on the air hose can become stretched over time. If you have enough slack in the hose, you can snip off a small portion of the end and reattach it to make sure it fits snug. If not, attach the hose to the air dome and place a zip tie around it where it connects to the air dome fitting. Make the zip tie snug enough to keep the hose from slipping off. Do not overtighten.

If you need an illustration of your washer and components, searspartsdirect.com, appliancepartspros.com, or pcappliancerepair.com usually have some excellent exploded view diagrams that you can refer to.

If you determine the pump is damaged and needs replaced, the following link explains how:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r397092-replacing_water_pump

Prices can vary between these sites so shop and compare. NOTE: Use the part number from the Sears site and use it to "Search by Part Number" on the other sites. It makes it easier to find as some sites may not have your model number listed, but will still carry the part.

To reinstall the washer casing, follow these steps to ensure you get the case correctly placed and secure on the frame:

1. With the lid of the washer open, grasp case under front rim and place it on the washer frame. While looking down through the washer lid opening, make sure the front lip of the case is placed UNDER the washer frame and rocked back onto the frame to ensure that the small cleats on the frame fit into the slotted grooves on the washer case base. If you do not get the case seated correctly it will rattle and vibrate while the washer is in operation.

2. Make sure the back of the washer fits into the washer casing on each side by leaning over the front of the washer and grasping the back panel and pull towards you. Reinsert the brass clips by placing the clips into the slot on the back of the washer first, and then forcefully push then down into the opening on top of the washer.

3. REINSTALL LID SWITCH CONNECTOR. It is easy to forget. If you do not reconnect it, the washer will not work correctly.

4. Reinstall console.

Read through everything thoroughly before beginning any repairs. If you have any questions, or require additional assistance, please let me know. I hope this information is helpful.

NOTE: You can also order a repair manual for about $20 (part number 1170635) at repairclinic.com if you need more instructions.

I have an Electrolux EWD1477. I have been away for four months and I'm having problems with it. I set to do the quickwash30 program and press start, you hear the clicks, it might put some water in then...

My EWD1477 was doing this a year ago and I fixed it. Then it started doing it again a month ago and I seem to have cleared it again.

Firstly, remove the drain hose from where it is inserted into a laundry sink hole to make sure it is not blocked or sealed in with sludge.

Secondly, make sure the machine is empty of water and clothes and then turn the machine to off with the Program Selector Dial. Then turn off the power at the socket and remove the power plug and leave for five minutes.

Step 1: put the plug back in and turn the power back on.

Step 2: turn the selector switch to the right (Whites/Intensive). The green light of the Start/Pause button should be flashing and the green lights on for Prewash/wash, Rinses and Spinning. Don't press any other buttons or change any other settings.

Step 3: press the Start/Pause button and wait for the machine to empty any excess water. Press it again immediately after you hear water flowing into the machine OR two audible clicks. The machine is now in pause mode with the green light of the Start/Pause button flashing. Only the green light on the Prewash/Wash button should be on. Leave it in pause mode for 30 minutes and then press the Start/Pause button to recommence the cycle.

Step 4: If the Start/Pause button begins flashing, water stops flowing into the machine and the three green lights mentioned above are back on, turn the Program Selector Dial back to off, wait 10 seconds, and repeat the process above.

Step 5: If when you then turn the Program Selector Dial to Whites/Intensive and hear the two audible clicks, immediately press the Start/Pause button to set the machine in pause mode. Wait 30 minutes. Then press the Start/Pause button to recommence the cycle.

Hopefully the cycle will run without a problem.

Hi i have an indesit w 123s washing machine, that set to any program it doesnt move on it just does that setting, then if you turn the machine off and set it to end program you can reset to rinse and the...

hello try restting it before you bin it
  1. Turn the washing machine off with the on off button.
  2. Turn the selector knob to a dot, or any off position
  3. Turn the washing machine back on and watch for rapid flashing on the neon light
  4. Turn the washing machine off and select the new program (or maybe spin)
  5. Turn it back on and the new program should start
NOTE: Resetting the timer selector knob as shown above may stop the clicking round, but if your washing machine has a fault, the clicking round may return when your washing machine encounters the fault again. If your washing machine's program selector knob is clicking round on its own, then read the section above Washing machine stops with lights flashing hope it helps
