When i turn the key the car will start then immediately shut off. Whats going on?

I will start the car and it will shut off several times before it remains running, then it will run fine. Sometimes I get in the car and it will start and remain running on the first try. It never shuts off while im driving. Could weak batteries in the key fob be causing this or is it something else?

The batteries in the key don't have anything to do with its ability to start the car. Try turning the key to the run position several times before starting the car. This will get the fuel pump running and build pressure in the fuel system. If this technique works you are looking at a fuel pressure leak when the car is off. If the problem only happens when the engine is hot, you likely have a failing crankshaft position sensor. Beyond that, I can't help without the car in front of me for testing.

An ignition switch can fail in many ways, one is where you will loose connection immediately after you release the key to the run position,
it will act as though the engine started and you just turned the key off as soon as it started, and other times work just fine

SOURCE: e320 car key doesn't work

I had the same problem with my 2001 E320. Roadside assistance came to my house and said it was a problem with the key. Ordered a new key (cost about $220 from Keys European in Van Nuys, CA) and the key worked. When I went to dealer to pick up the key, I spoke to a service consultant and he said that hes seen that problem before and replacing the key wont do anything (even though it did work). He said something about a ESI (something like that) and said that parts only on that cost about $600. So first thing you should try is replacing your key. Hope I helped.

SOURCE: driving car it just quit, will not start back

fuel pump relay behind plastic cover that is behind battery. there are 2 black relays ine is climate control and the other is fuel pump. the climate control will say klima on it. Bridge circuit 30(hot at all times) and circuit 87(consumer) with a fused wire and the vehicle should start if that is the problem. In all honesty it sounds like an ignition problem. I would remove the dist. cap if it is a cis. if it is electronic fuel inj. try wiggling the crank senser harnes and see if it starts. the early lh and hfm cars had major wireharness issues

SOURCE: The battery alternator visit workshop

Have the alternator output verified by a tester. Alternators don't always fail 100%, sometimes they keep charging, but at reduced capacity. A bad diode, winding, or brush is all it takes. It may work fine until you start running lots of accessories, then drain the battery badly.

Testimonial: "Took the car in for testing.Everything is fine but the cluster needs to be reprogrammed."

My 2003 Mini Cooper turns over several times without starting. I shut the key off and try again and it usually starts the 2nd time

you may want to check for a plugged fuel filter. because it sounds like fuel is not build up pressure in lines. to start it on first try. if not that, check fuel pressure from pump. good-day it could be the fuel pressure regulator also. check filter first.

When i turn the car off sometimes the switch sticks and i wiil have to start and shut off engine several times to get keys out

Sounds like its time to have the ignition checked and maybe replaced,if it get to a point where you cant turn it then the repair will cost more if the key wont turn this make removing the lock harder. also a worn key will also cause this, tell you what try to spary a little wd40 into the key hole and then start and shut car off a few times then spray again and start abd shut off a few more time to see if this will help. good luck and hope this is helpful
