Sears tractor cuts out while cutting grass like somebody turns the key off

Could be a failing ignition coil,i have seen a tractor start right up and runs, until the coil heats up from the motor. When this happens the motor dies,do to the coil not producing spark to the spark plug. You didn't mention if the tractor's motor was restarted right after it quit running or was it left until later when you attempted to restart the motor allowing the motor to cool. However, how old is the spark plug? If the spark plug is old,the plug will start failing,do to heat also. I would try a new right type spark plug, make sure the gap is set correctly according to your Owner's Manual. I have found that the gap on some new plugs, not set correctly, when it comes right out of the box. You can check the plug,by turning the motor by hand to see if there is a spark, turn on the ignition switch first(DO NOT USE THE START POSITION) when doing this, the tractor just might crank over, will not start if the plug is out.(But your hand could be injured). Check for a bright spark,if there is one, install the plug then try starting the tractor,in the start position. If you, have checked, what i suggested and everything is good-to-go. The tractor should start and run, like a new tractor. One more suggestion, check the fuel filter, while your down, this maybe or maybe not be the problem, doesn't hurt to check it. Sincerely,Brad Locke. Tools in replacing 1996 honda odyssey spark plugs

the only specialty tool your should need is a spark plug socket and an extension for the ratcheting wrench.

Other than that, metric wrenches and sockets should work just great.

The starter motor wouldn't turn over.. so.. pulled the carbs as a unit.. pulled the starter.. then buffed the commutator... and voila.. the starter motor now works great.. however.. now that I've gotten...

I did a Suzuki 550 carburetor over haul 10 years ago and had 3 of the 4 intake manifolds crack or separate. I would start by closely inspecting the manifolds. Have you tried draining a carburetor bowl to see if it is full of gas? If the vacuum line to the fuel petcock is not hooked up correctly you could just have fuel starvation. You can hold a spark plug to a cylinder head and turn the motor over to see if you have spark. Correct amount of fuel, correct amount of air, and spark is what you need.

How do I change the spark plugs?

Engine off
Remove one spark plug wire / using correct size spark plug wrench with / rubber boot designed for spark plugs (deep well socket with rubber boot) remove (1) spark plug / gap new replacement spark plug to specs / install replacement spark plug by hand into head of engine /finger tight /using spark plug socket and rachet finish tighting spark plug / tighten just beyond snug being careful to not over tighten and breaking spark plug ..if in doubt about the proper tighting consult motor manual for torque specs. use torque specs in conjunction with appropiate torque wrench . Re-install removed spark plug wire ...proceed to remaining spark plugs doing one at a time until completed.
