One of many causes, have you tipped the mower on its side recently? is there oil in the engine( has engine seized? has the rope got wrapped around starter cup?

Can i take the pull starter off my briggs and stratton mower in one unit

Yes you can... if you are removing the center screw and wanna take the whole rope pulley off, do it slow... if when you start pulling off the pulley and you feel like the recoil is coming up with it, immediately put it back down or the recoil spring will unravel fast... it's not impossible to ravel the spring back up, just a pain if you have never done it before. If you are trying to install new rope, you can do so without removing the pulley at all.

Go to you tube and you will find multiple videos on how to replace rope on lawnmower recoil assy
Tons of videos. You can do this!! Good luck

11.5 briggs and stratton engine has excessive kickback or recoil when pull started.

Sounds like your recoil clutch is dirty or frozen from dirt. You will find it under the rope housing. It is on top of the shaft. Remove and replace or clean and lubricate it.

How do you start a biggs stratton 450 series rotorvator

Usually the 450 series only a recoil starter....a pull rope to start it. Meaning you have to pull the starter rope to start it.

Have a 2-4 hp lawnmower where the rewind spring and rope was broke. Have put new spring and rope on-works great in housing. When attach it to lawnmower the rope pulls out but won't retract back in. As soon...

When you remove the recoil shroud ( housing ), the square shaft sticking out should move freely in a counter-clockwise direction and you should hear clicks when you twist. If you don't hear the little balls clicking or the square shaft doesn't move freely counterclockwise, then that square shaft is rusted onto the end of the crankshaft and must be freed before it can be removed. This is a common problem for mowers left out in the elements. Sounds like the shaft is frozen onto the crankshaft end. Procedure: First, disconnect the spark plug. Get a magnet ready because 5 little balls are gonna come rolling out on this upcoming move. Take a 1/4

Replaced pull cord on craftsman push mower but wont retract back like its's been pulled all the way out it's all slack. What do i need to do to get it to spring back? It's 5.5hp self propelled mower about...

if you get this the first time get a lottery ticket fast.
take the recoil off and apart, check to see if the spring end is broken off. (sometimes you can bend a new hook into it but it will usually break because its hardened).
buy the way, Usually you can wind a rope around what the recoil connects to, to start the engine at this point.
take the handle off the end of the rope and wind it around the drum/spool leaving a few inches hanging out.
hook both ends of the spring to their stops and wind the spring tighter about four turns, then thread the end of the rope through the hole and pull on the rope and test the recoil. Don't lt it go.
pull the rope out and put a "marline hitch" in it or use a visegrip pliers to hold the rope out and tie the handle back on.
replace recoil.
if the rope looks fuzzy most all hardware stores have it.
good luck

How do I repair the pull cord on a masport 600 mower - the cord snapped when I was trying to start it.

Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly

- Remove the recoil assy. Depending on engine model you may hae to remove the air shroud with the recoil.
- Remove the broken rope assy from the spool by lifting the knot out of the hole and cut off the knot.
- Pull the remainder of the old rope out of the recoil spool
- Take the remainder of rope out of the pull handle

On the new rop burn the ends with a match. With wet fingers pinch the ends of the rope while hot/melted until it is the same size as the rope. Form a point on the ends
- Install the new rope in the handle by threading it into the handle and tie ONE small knot on the end of the trheaded through rope.
- Pull very hard on the rope until the new knot seats in the handle. Assemble handle.
- PREWIND the spool in the recoil until it stops winding. I.e. max out spring tension but do not over wind it or you will break the spring. Make sure NOT to wind it in the wrong direction or you will break the spring
- Back off the spool until the knot hole is aligned with the rope guide bushing on the outside of the recoil.
- Either use a C-clamp or a 2nd person to hold the pre-wound spool in place.
-Thread the new rope through the outer rope guide and into then through the knot hole in the spool.
-Tie ONE small knot in the rope and pull it HARD back into the knot hole until the knot seats in the knot hole.
-Release C-clamp or have 2nd person let go of the spool. The rope will rewind into the recoil assy.
-reinstall recoil/air shroud on the engine.

That should get you mowing again.
Thanks for choosing FixYa,
Kelly

Broken starter cord on briggs and stratton quantum 40 roughly 1994 how to repair

Remove the recoil. Sometimes depending up on model this required complete air shroud removal. Remove the parts of the old rope. Remove the rope fro the rope handle. NOTE the knot in the handle. Brun both ends of the nylon rope with a match and pinch the burned end into as small of circumference as possible. Install new rope into the starter handle and tie the knot. Pull the new rope into the handle until it seats securely.

Prewind the recoil pulley as far as you can easily wind it. Back it off (unwind) just until the rope guide and pulley knot hole are aligned. Then either c-clamp it in place with the rope knot hole aligned with the rope guide hole or have a 2nd person hold it the pretensioned spring and pulley in position. Thread the rope through the rope guide and on into the pulley knot hole. (takes some effort to get it aligned and through the knot hole!) Pull the new rope through the knot hole and tie 1 knot. Pull starter rope and fit knot into pulley knot hole. Release pulley C-clamp or have helper let go of pulley. Rope should rewind into the recoil.

Reinstall recoil / air shroud. Happy mowing!
Thanks for choosing FixYa.

Lawn mower won't start

to check for firing remove the spark plug insert it in the plug boot and pull the rope while watching to see if the plug sparks be carefull not to touch the plug electrode while pulling the rope or it will shock you. If you don't have a spark, try a different plug. If still no spark the coil could be bad.
