Ice maker freezing up, no ice, cannot control thermostat

If it's locking up, it could be the main gear drive with a broken gear. On some models you can replace the motor module and others you have to replace the ice maker.
OR if it's freezing up with ice--- If it overfills and drips, look for an adjustment behind the plastic endcover with a +/- on it. - is less water.

If it continuously drips, replace the water inlet valve on the back where the house water supply comes in.
The water inlet valve on the back of unit opens when the ice maker needs water. If the valve doesn't seal good because of sediment or wear it will continue to drip and when the water reaches the ice maker supply tube it will freeze. You can take the water line off the valve and watch to see if it drips.

Here's a diagram and parts for your ice maker.

Kenmore ice maker not releasing ice - it stays in the bottom and ice maker makes sounds like it's trying to kick it out but doesn't. It's frozen in a big block.

Sounds as if your water valve is letting too much water in and too big of ice cubes won't let the rake strip out the ice. Look and see if the ice in the tray is up to the round arm with the fingers. If it is then the water valve needs to be replaced but you will need to get that ice outta there. Take the ice maker down by removing the 2 screws holding it above the tray. Sometimes there is one under the tray as well. Unplug the ice maker and run hot water over the tray keeping the water away from the electronic part. This will release the ice and then reinstall the ice maker.

Another possible problem is the motor module may be broken. Pull the white cover off the front of the ice maker. This will take a little elbow grease. When you access the module (You will see a white dial about as big as a half dollar) see if right in the center of that dial one of the two prongs holding that dial is broken. If you pull on it a bit and it comes off then you are sure that your module is bad. To replace it...remove the three Phillips head screws holding it on. The shut off arm will also be attached...just pull it out with a good tug. Pull the module straight out and replace the module. When replacing the module, you may need to rotate the arm in the ice maker with the fingers on it to fit in the slot in the center of the module. You should have ice within two hours.

Ice maker makes too much ice

if it continues to make ice even with the shutoff lever in the up position then you have a broken shutoff cam on the motor module and the module will need to be replace. the part number is 628366 and costs around 30-50 dollars. thanks peyton

Ice maker will not fill

chances are that the motorized module on the end of the ice maker is broken. All you need to do is replace the motor module which you can purchase at an appliance parts store in your area or look it up online. The white dial looking gear in the center of it will most likely have broken tabs in the center.

First off is the ice maker still cycling? If it is you should check the water valve. If not first pull off the white cover on the ice maker and check the pins in the middle of the cog wheel.879aba8.jpg
If they look smashed or broken you need to replace module. (part# W10122536) if that looks fine you'll need to delve deeper. There is a thermostat in the ice maker that controls its operation. If you can get a wire about 3in long and bend it into a U shape. Then insert it in to the "T" and "H" holes on the module.

Pull them out after about a 30 sec count. If the ice starts cycling then you need to replace the thermostat. (Part # 627985) if it doesn't cycle then the motor is probably bad and you'll need to replace the module. Hopes this helps and if you need more help or clarification then let me know. Good Luck!

IF NO WATER IN ICE MAKER, CHECK FOR RESTRICTION IN FILL TUBE SUCH AS FROZEN OFF WITH ICE. REMOVE FILL TUBE AND RUN HOT WATER OVER IT TO MELT ICE IN TUBE.
WATCH FOR WATER COMING SLOWLY OUT PLASTIC FILL LINE ATTACHED TO TUBE ON BACK OF REFRIGERATOR.
IF WATER SLOWLY DRIPS OUT OF FILL LINE, REPLACE FILL VALVE( LOCATED WHERE HOUSE WATER LINE ATTACHES TO REFRIGERATOR.

IF ICE MAKER HAS WATER/ICE IN IT, PULL FRONT COVER OFF ICE MAKER TO ACCESS CONTROL HEAD. INSPECT LARGE WHITE GEAR ON FRONT OF CONTROL. IF THE RETAINING TAB IN THE CENTER IS BROKEN, REPLACE MODULE OR ENTIRE ICE MAKER. THERE SHOULD BE TWO
RETAINING TABS HOLDING THE GEAR IN PLACE.

THE FREEZER TEMP NEEDS TO BE A MINIMUM OF 10 DEGREES FOR THE ICE MAKER TO CYCLE. IF THE FREEZER TEMP IS NOT COLD ENOUGH WE WILL NEED TO FIND OUT WHY.

pull the front cover off of the icemaker and see if the drive gear is broken (there are 2 tabs in the center of the gear make sure these arent twisted or broken as well) if so replace the module on the fron of the icemaker. if that checks fine check for frozen fill line..

Ice Maker Problem

The "ice maker module" is pretty vague. THere's lots of things that work together to make ice. Could be a bad motor, a bad solenoid (electric valve that lets the water in), a broken gear, a loose wire, or just frozen up. If you havent pinpointed the problem, you are probably wasting money buying a new "ice maker module". I'd advise looking for obvious problems (frozen/jammed, no water input, broken looking stuff) and if you dont see anything, call a repairman.
