Hi Graham

It sounds very much to me as if the water heater isn't wired to your house correctly. I think I'd be looking at the connections at the water heater itself if it worked properly before.

Below is a diagram which explains and shows the proper wiring scheme.

Hope this solves your problem.

When I have central heating on, why do I also get very hot water in taps even though water heating switched off?

This could be due to incorrect installation, incorrect wiring of controls, or an unintended consequence of combined central heating and hot water supply.

The heating element continues to heat even after the hot water tap is turned off thus popping the thermal switch. The red light is off on front of unit but you can hear the water heating. Any ideas?

check the pressure control that switches the element on or off
if it is faulty then it switches on when the tap is turned on dropping the pressure but it will not recognize that the increase in pressure when the tap is turned off so it keeps heating the water.

You either have failed heating elements, or your dip tube has corroded and deteriorated.

check out this link, and review that site. Very and highly informational.

No hot water from kitchen tap

The hot side of the faucet is most likely plugged with something that came up thru the water system. The average thankless waterheater requires at least 1/2 to 3/4 gpm flow rate for the unit to sense flow and turn on. If there is not enough flow it will not fire and heat the water. Not sure about this particular unit but a few require at least one full gallon per minute flow. So chances are that if you fix the faucet, you fix the hot water issue at the same time

I have to turn the hot water tap on full open to get hot water

Type of water heater is unknown
If you have single-handled faucet the faucet cartridge might be bad.
If you have recirculation system, then check valve might be bad.

The problem with all that type of water heater is that once the hot tap is turned on sufficient flow must be maintained through the water heater to keep the main gas burner alight. If the heat adjuster is turned up to high, then the person using the hot water will turn it down to a low rate which means the main burner will turn off and result in cold water. Try setting the heat control to the lowest setting that still gives hot enough water. If you have a thermometer adjust control for a temperature of around 50 to 55 degrees Celcius. You may have to fiddle with fine adjustments to get the temperature and flow rates to maintain a constant output of hot water. You may still have intermittent problems. If the heater only supplies baths or showers you could set the temperatuer even lower (45 to 50) to ensure that the hot tap is used more than the cold which will maintain flow and therefore heat.

Sounds like the by-pass valve diaphragm. This valve detects that hot water is being drawn off at the tap and then diverts the mains input water across the heat exchanger. Very often it's the diaphragm inside the valve which is punctured or split. This can be replaced [depending on model] if you take apart the valve
. Remove the front panel and lower the control panel. The valve is at the bottom left of the boiler
Suggest turning off the service taps to the two heating pipes and the cold mains inlet pipes before tackling the valve

Heatslave diverter valve

clicking rads are due to pipe expansion when getting hot.
If the hot water [secondary circuit] gets hot and the boiler stays on [does not keep going on and off] even with a constant low water flow then the diverter should be ok.
there is a valve to prevent the primary circuit [central heating] [ CH] from sending water to the rads. this or its control may be at fault.
both the
Both the CH pipes to & from the boiler should have manual valves to turn off. do this then try the hot tap-full on. If the boiler goes into overheat mode and the overheat stat kicks in to turn the boiler off -- then :-
Check also the heat exchanger, it may be furred up especially if you are in a hard water area. It means taking it off and manually checking [pour water through] If you're lucky it will be just muck to be forced out with hose pipe pressure, if not a new one
