Without telling the model of the copier you can run the maintenance and alternatively open the tray and shake the toner. also clean the rollers to remove dust and paper debris.
Check also that there are not paperclips stuck in the rear tray.

"Time for periodic maintenance"

Go into (08) mode by holding 0 and 8 when turning on the copier. 251 is the number of copies until it displays that message and 252 is the count since last Preventative maintenance. Resetting 252 will clear the message or putting 251 higher than the value of 252 will clear it as well.

My e-studio 45 has 260,000 copies and says it needs maintenance. It works well. Do I just replace the drum or does it need other parts like a fuser too?

Hello sir; When it said need maintenance, it means need PM( periodical maintenance) that including drum, drum blade ,developer, corona wire, etc. the fuser and pressure roller depend on condition.

Our Toshiba studio 202 L always has a caption that says Time for Periodic Maintenance. Is there a way to get rid of this caption.

Hi:

Yes, there is a way to shut that off, but the reason it is on is because your in need of various parts replacement under the maintenance schedule. Leaving it on will not effect anything. If it is shut off then you will likely forget about it until the copier really starts to act up and this could cost you more in the long run.
