Question about Poulan Garden

I have an older poulan pro 18 hp ohv.kohler engine. Tried adjusting throttle linkage to get more rpm. the throttle /carburator linkage plate has adjustment also. In what order do you start adustments

Not positive on year of mower but within a year or two. started messing with linkage plate and idle screws on side plate and not sure where to start the adjustments to tune carb.

The Kohler is design for 3600 Max rpm with it developing peak torque at 2200 rpm 42.5 N·m (31.4 ft. lb.)

If your trying to go above the 3600 rpm then your only risking damaging the engine plus causing unnessary wear and tear on it.

Recheck the valve lash sometimes they are set too tight. Do a compression test if the valve are set ok. If it indicated lower than 80 psi it may be a burn out valve.

When u adj a kohler carb you adj fuel not air. Always adj the high speed then low speed. Then adj the curb idle. 1.5 turns out is a good starting point. Then tweak it after its warmed up. Hope this helps

Correct that there are no adjustments, but try cleaning the carb jets first, as many times a small amount of debris in the fuel can cause a performance problem. A replacement carb will be close to $200, and NO carbs will be adjustable. A gasket kit is available if you need. Contact your local Briggs dealer to procure the part.

Try cleaning the jets first.
Fuel Starvation - Float Bowl Carburetor
1) remove air filter assembly
*be cautious of tearing the mounting gasket. If it does tear, you HAVE to replace it. It is part of the priming system
2) remove the float bowl fastener. This is the main jet
3) carefully remove the float bowl, the rubber o-ring/gasket will not be able to be used if it is removed, you WILL have to replace it
4) using a spray 'carb cleaner'
spray up thru the center of the carburetor
spray and clean the main jet with cleaner and 'tag' wire
(tag wire is very thin, and can be used to clean the hole in the center of the main jet)
5) clean any debris from inside the bowl or carb body
6) re-install bowl and center bolt, air filter assembly

*if you need gaskets, your Briggs dealer can supply. The kit is cheaper than individual gaskets, and all the parts needed to finish the above repair are in the kit.

Kohler V-Twin (624 cc) RPM on the engine does not stay stable , It will raise and lower the RPM in any Throttle Range. Could the Governor be going bad???


Try a static governor adjustment first as it simply be out adjustment.

Static Adjustment Procedure
Make this adjustment whenever governor arm is
loosened or removed from cross shaft. Adjust as follows:
1. Make sure throttle linkage is connected to governor
arm and throttle lever on carburetor.
2. Loosen nut holding governor lever to cross shaft.
3. Move governor lever toward carburetor as far as it
will go (wide open throttle) and hold in this position.
4. Insert a long thin rod or tool into hole on cross shaft
and rotate shaft clockwise (viewed from end) as far
as it will turn, then torque nut to 6.8 N·m (60 in. lb.).

check for stuck butterfly on carb, also check wire linkage that moves butterfly for good connection or slippage. sometimes when you push the throttle up the butterfly opens a lot but gets stuck there even when throttleing bsack down.

What do I do if My 1981 corvette idles at high rpm (1500) and will not back off.


you may have a vacuam hose off somewhere, else adjust the throttle plate stop on the carb where the linkage comes to rest

Carburator linkage


The governor link hooks on the top right of this carb and the throttle linkage is on the left all this is you standing in front of engine looking toward the steering wheel with the hood off

POULAN 42CC 18" PP4218 WHAT ARE THEY CORRECT


Make sure the fuel filter, air cleaner, and muffler are not plugged. Make sure the fuel lines are not decayed or other damage. Turn H and L jet screws CW to stops (lightly), then back CCW 1-1/2 turns each. This is a basic setting that should allow the engine to start and run. Allow the engine to warm up, then pull the throttle full on. Adjust the H jet screw CW until the engine starts to speed up. Correct adjustment is when the engine 4-strokes at speed unloaded, but immediately 2-strokes when cutting. Release the throttle and adjust L jet screw CW until the engine idles fairly well, but allows the engine to 'follow the throttle'. If you go too far, the engine will 'gasp' when throttled. Hope this helps!

Rpm maxes out and I can't bring it down


check that throttle linkage is ok and free, check that throttle plate is free to move and not jammed - check that srew in the throttle plate is not allowing plate to restrict and jamb throttle

check the governor springs and links are in the correct places and are free to move , check that governor is working ?

if its not migght be governor is adjusted wrong or slipped
or its flown to peices

if unit is ohv model have seen the the ocilating balancer
torque link rod break and cause a engine to go to full throttle
as sson aas the engine was started

please let me know model and type numbers off the engine in question and its make ie briggs etc

and will try help further

Poulan chainsaw model #2550 Serial # 99246D100255-3 Carburator adjustment floods out will not start


Check the fuel filter, air filter, and muffler for plugging. Check the carburetor lower chamber diaphragm for flexibility and no damage. Also check the needle valve tip that the diaphragm controls for any damage or wear. If still flooding, turn both needle jet screws CW to stops (lightly), the back each out CCW 1-1/2 turns. This is a basic setting which should allow the engine to start and run.
Start the engine and allow to warm up. Pull the throttle full on and adjust H needle CW till the engine starts to speed up, but still 4-stroking. Correct adjustment is when the engine 4-strokes unloaded, but immediately 2-strokes when cutting. Release the throttle and adjust L needle CW for better idle but allows the engine to 'follow the throttle'. Adjust idle speed screw so that the chain stops turning, but the engine continues to run. Hope this helps!

The kohler engine on my poulan pro 42 inch 17 hp is reving way too high the throttle cable does not apear to be stuck
