Question about Briggs & Stratton Briggs Stratton Lawnmower Lawn Mower Short Block

1 Answer

Briggs Stratton 5hp I/C starts ok, runs, but will not rev

Model 132232, type 0322-01, Pulsa Jet Carb.(Mechanical governor), remote throttle on rotavator. The engine starts with choke, but will only idle on the fastest 'Run' setting and will idle without choke when warm. The throttle shaft on the carb body oscillates on its own, pulsing the revs at idle. When I spotted this I found that if I operate the throttle spindle manually at the carb body, I can make the engine rev fully and without any misfire or smoke. The engine stood unused for 3 years and the things tried so far are - - Checking governor and throttle spring and linkages. Difficult to see, but I think they are all there and connected correctly. - New spark plug, oil and air filter - New petrol - Throttle cable adjusted - New diaphragm and cleaned accessible passageways with diaphragm cover removed - Checked choke works as it should with air filter removed - Removed and cleaned idle needle valve and jet - Looked at lots of internet posts This is the Atco Merry Tiller model where the remote throttle connects to the engine below the fuel tank close to where the governor shaft exits the engine. Rather not strip the carb until all other possibilities explored, particularly as it runs ok when throttle on carb body is turned directly. Any advice welcome please. Pete

My money is on a partial blockage of the main jet or the passageway to it. You're having to force it to run through the idle jet by fully choking the incoming air. There's not enough gas coming in with the choke open to allow it to run.

I'm thiniking total carb disassembly, carb cleaner and an air compressor combined with a ton of patience will take care of the issue.

This is probably not a blown gasket issue. A bad head gasket can allow oil to enter the cylinder head/combustion chamber if it's not sealing off the valve area. A simple suggestion is to check on the engine opposite the carb side for the oil/crankcase breather. It will have 2 screws holding it onto the block. It has a type of filter media in it that traps excessive oil and oil vapors from the engine. It is also connected by a tube to the air filter housing. When you tipped, you probably put too much oil in the breather and it was inducted over to the air filter/carb intake side.
Clean or replace the breather after checking it and also make sure you haven't overfilled the Briggs with oil and only use SAE 30 in the engine. Muti-viscosity isn't recommended in summer unless you run synthetic, then it is OK.
Please vote on this solution.

Have you checked the choke that it is off after you get the engine started, the black smoke is definitely from the choke, if you take the carb off and check that the needle closes when it should,as one can easily do an adjustment by bending the float/tab,rgds

SOURCE: after the engine began hunting i cleaned out the

did you replace you diaphrams or just clean them, does it have a float bowl or just diaphram? sounds like during all you cleaning you did'nt adj the tab to the needle, therefore diaphram is not opening needle which is not giving gas to the carb. tab should be flush with carb body and when you push on it needle should move to open and let fuel in, good Luck

Tight throttle spring on briggs ok?

I do that on people's mowers when they come in not running fast enough. If they are running too fast I stretch them a little and even cut the end off the spring and reshaped the end to get the right speed. Yes you can do this but be sure you do not over rev the engine or you will ruin it.

Probably not the governor, most likely it is in the carburetor. The main or the high speed jet circuit is likely obstructed.

Motor runs wide open when set @ slow speed

It could be that the governor spring has become disconnected or has broken on an end where it hooks onto the throttle linkage. If the spring is OK & throttle linkage is not binding it could mean the governor drive inside the engine has failed preventing the governor from operating correctly. You may need to take the engine to a mechanic to fix the problem.

10 hp briggs runs at high speed, govenor don't seem to be working

One possible cause for this problem is debris, sticking,or frozen linkage between the governor and the throttle butterfly. Depending on the make and model of your engine it will either be a mechanical governor that has a arm that goes down into the case or a air vane governor that is behind the recoil shroud of the engine. Move all the linkage that connects between the governor and throttle and speed lever to make sure it doesn't bind or sticks. If it does pray a little silicone or wd 40 spray on it to help reduce friction. Also on air vane governors they can become stuck from debris that inhibits it from moving make sure there is nothing in the way of the governor. If all of the linkage is working properly and you still have the issue try adjusting the the fuel mix screws and the high rev. settings on the throttle lever (if equip.).
