Wht dose it spark on startup and allso when it stops but not during is it the brushea?thanks

This is usually brush related. It could be that the rotor needs to be machined round or that there is damage to it. Check the brushes first. Disconnect power, remove the cap over the brush and pull it out. Remember which way it came out. Check for length of brush, should be more than 1/4" long, check the spring to see if it is discoloured. Check the end of the brush, it should be smooth also. The sparks are an indication that the contact is not good for some reason.

I own a stihl fs-55 brush cutter, every time I start the engine I have to remove and clean the spark plug. Any ideas what's causing this.

If your spark plug is a whitish color I would change out the coil. It should only cost around $30-40 and with the age and the time of year you use it i would suspect a coil. At some point moisture has gotten into the coil windings or the path of spark and fried it is what it sounds like. Probably giving you a weak spark and causing a whitish color on your plug
OR...and sounds more like the problem ...
your plug is covered in a black soot. It is carbon buildup....service your valves...You probably have carbon build up on your valves as well as they are probably out of adjustment. Good luck

Thanks for your help. We got the high idle to stop ether by working the PCV valve hose or by putting our old throttle position senor back on. However, we still have a misfire, and we get codes P305 an

Well code 316 means the computer has detected a miss during startup, and code 305 means cylinder number 5 is not producing power. That could be a lack of fuel, spark, or compression.
At least you know to check cylinder 5 for the problem.

Dewalt DW718 Sparks When cutting . just bought it

The people from Lowes were right.
There are two types of motor designs: Induction motors and brush-type motors.
All electric motors that have brushes make sparks where the brushes contact the rotating commutator. They also run less efficiently but they are a bit smaller than induction motors for equal power output. Brushed motors can also deliver greater power at initial startup.
Because the sparks in brushed motors create heat, the housing around the motors typically have ventilation slots for air to go through to keep the commutator cool. This means you are likely to see the sparks if you look in the right place.
Since it's more difficult to get an induction motor turning, they typically have a "start capacitor" mounted on the side of the motor to give an extra kick to get the stator turning. While induction motors use less power when running, the amperage they use at start-up is typically double the running amperage.

Electrical spark unit stoped . Getting power through switch but motor will not start.

More than likely you have a worn brush. If the breaker was running good and then just stopped this is the case. These brushes have a pop-off feature that will stop the motor when it is time to replace the brushes. If you replace the brushes and are getting a lot of sparking, the armature or field more than likely may have a short. Sometimes its the armature, sometimes it's the field, and sometimes its both (running short). You have to have a short tester and a growler in order to test for the shorts. One thing to look for is any burn marks on the windings of the armature, and look for scarring on the inside of the field which may have gotten damage due to rubbing from the armature. An imbalance in the electrical field can push the armature into the side of the field while it spins.
