Cannot get av signal and cannot tune in dvd/ vcr combo

hello I have just purchased a lcd full hd tv an AWA MODEL LC32G76 i also own a panasonic combination dvd recorder with vhs, MODEL DMR-ES30V i plug the y r and white leads from th player common out connections to y r and yellow connections to back of tv when i put the tv on av1 for tuning the player i get message no signal but i can plug into av2 and watch dvds, is awa compatible with panasonic, and what about the cables with red blue and green do i need other cables, getting frustrated please help regards from sara
