Sliders are easy where-as pots are not. SLIDERS - provided you insert the "tuner/control cleaner w-lube" extension nozzle past the plastic dust/dirt shield, a few "spurts" of spray, removing nozzle extension and then move control back-n-forth will clean the control. POTS - you MUST shoot tuner/control cleaner in the small slot adjacent to the electrical connections (inside the unit). Removing knobs and spraying the control shaft never works as the shaft-body seal is an extremely tight tolerance. Check here for a view of the pot.. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Potentiometer

Left and right wires are like the ends of a carbon resistor.
The centre connection is the slider that slides along the carbon resistance.
Spray inside the device,
The centre sliders often loose connection from overuse.
Carefully take apart and clean & put slight tension back on centre slider.
Look to see if carbon track is worn out?

Take the centre wire off the Pot and try it on either end.
One will be full volume the other will be lowest volume.

Read the Ohms value of the Pot (stamped on)
or use a cheap Ohm section of MultiMeter
Note the size of threaded area
Get similar to take it's place

My technics 1210 starts spinning v.quickly when switched on without pressing start button any help would be very much appreciated

You can try cleaning all controls with something like De-oxit.
Sometimes, oxidization causes speed issues.

You will need to take the cover off the bottom to access the controls then, spray with De-oxit and move the sliders back an forth for a couple of minutes. Just to make sure, spray everything a couple of times.

There should be instructions to access the sliders, and pots, online.

Good luck, hopefully the issue is not due to a failed electronic component.

Slide pots for PV14 mixer

The pot needs to be cleaned. Get a spraty can of DeOxit 5. Spray it into the track and move the slider up and down a number of times. If that doesn't fix it, replace the slide pot.

Would you know how to correctly open a CFX20 to clean the pots?

Yopu do NOT clean the pots... if you have noisy sliders, get some CRC226 at Home Depot in the electrical dept. Spray a small bit in the center of the slot for the slider and run the slider up and down. Use sparingly and apply a tiny amount once more. The sliders are NON_REPAIRABLE if this won't fix them and major disassembly is required involving removing the round knobs, fader knobs, screws and other nuts on the jacks. Hours of work. Pots require desoldering tool and use of soloder wick and plunger type removal tools often causes damage to the circuit board.

The balance pot of my NAD C370 is not working, will the amp still work if I remove the balance pot?

Only if you replace the pot with two resistors of equal value. Both need to be also equal to 1/2 the value of the pot. Then at the point the 2 res tie together -- Tie that point to the middle lead location and the other leads to the other points where the pot was connected. Use 1/2 watt or 1 watt res.

I have my pioneer djm 600 for about 5 years. I went to sell it the other day and turned it on. It worked perfectly except it was only playing through one speaker. I checked the speakers and they were fine....

You've got dirty pots mate! You need to clean all the dust and **** from inside the sliders and the circular trims. The plastic shaft ALPS pots in the DJM600 don't have a sealing bush so if you pull the knob off and spray some "no-residue contact cleaner" down the shaft you may get it to the bottom. DO NOT use WD40 as that leaves an oil and will clog the pots (as the oil will eventually mix with new dust and make a gloopy paste) This would then break the sweeper contact with the resistive surface.

Virtually all the ALPS pots on the 600 are stereo so as you have lost a channel some of your pots have lost connection already. Cleaning may help but if not you may need to strip down desolder the troublesome ones and replace (or if your feeling brave bend open the tabs and clean internally)

Don't worry though. I got the right cleaner (electronic use no-residue stuff) from a car accessory shop and it all started working again without opening her up.

Could need repair of bad solder connections or a cleaning of the pot. With the receiver off turn the balance pot back and forth several times, this may be all you need to do. If it improves a couple drops of wd40 on the pot and a couple more turns should clean it up.

All mechanical switches such as sliders and pots will get noisy after time. They get mildew and tarnish on contacts. Get a can of WD-40 and spray all switches and pots inside. You can do this by inserting the straw nozzle into slider switch slot or pot space where wires and attach. Spray briefly (short burst), then work control to both extremes of travel.

probably I would say no. Unless you know how to read a schematic or know how to do certain small static checks on the output devices and the drivers as well as the power suppy feeding these devices.
