If it has a condenser in the points system or if it is an electronic unit ,replace it
the listing heading is gx 160 which should make it a honda engine probably with electronic ignition.

IF that is a small engine and has a magneto. You need to check the gap between the coil and the magnet on the flywheel. The easiest way to judge that gap is with a business card. If it fits between the two parts without effort, then it is too much gap.

98 chev 3500 with 5.7 won't start no codes cranks good and tries to go but acts like timing is way advanced or erratic. Where do I start looking?

Could be a spark problem where the dist cap is shorting out.
Or weak plug wires letting electricity jump to ground or other wires.
Could also be out of time due to a timing chain issue.

I would tell you to stop guessing and throwing parts on that you dont need. First have it scanned and see if there are any trouble codes. you need to replace the ALL the spark plugs, Use only Motorcraft or Autolite platinum spark plugs gapped properly. . Be careful as coils are a common weak item , and are about $95 each. the Idle Air Control (IAC) solenoids are common to go bad also (controls idle speed)

Timing Reference High Resolution Signal A ( No Pulses) This is a misfire code so try this info. This info is where your mechanic would be following.

The following info comes from a code reference guide for troubleshooting.

Misfires can be caused by worn or fouled spark plugs, a weak spark (weak coil, bad spark plug wire), loss of compression, vacuum leaks, anything that causes an unusually lean fuel mixture (lean misfire), an EGR valve that is stuck open, dirty fuel injectors, low fuel pressure, or even bad fuel.
A random misfire code usually indicates a vacuum leak or bad gas.
a misfire in a specific cylinder should lead you to check the spark plug, fuel injector and compression.

A weak erratic spark from one or more electrode usually indicates a bad spark module. No spark from one of the electrodes while the others work properly usually indicates a bad electrode. Inspect the porcelain of the electrode for cracks, chips or burn marks. If there are any, the electrode should be replaced. If one of the burner knobs is turned to the light position and nothing happens, but all the others function correctly, the spark ignition switch for that one burner is likely bad. The switch can be taken out of the system and checked with an ohmmeter. It should close for continuity at the light position only.

Erratic oven temperature

The ignitor is probably weak and not relighting when it needs to. Replace the ignitor.

Engine is running erratically

You have probably already done this, but...
Recheck your connections to the new components.
Then check your spark plug & spark plug wire on the non firing cylinder. Next you need to check out the coil.
