Problems with tape drives HP7980A HP-IB.reel stopping with message missload. reel moves and after obtaining BOT jump forward, but doesn't jump back to BOT and failed
I have read info about HP3000 and HP7980 tape drive. We have working system HP3000, ser.70 and some ser. 52 in Moscow, Russia in INION RUN Institute and Library of social sciences. It was a big fire in our library 30 jan/2015. A lot of inform is in the INTERNET, national tragedy... We have lost a few millions of books, but I saved HP3000 and after total drying it was a lot of water HP3000 and disc drives are working now? but I have problems with tape drives HP7980A HP-IB. All of them now in autoloading are stopping with message missloading. I cannot understand why? I cleaned everything, tapes are new. May be some trouble in controller in the host? But it seems to me during autoload proc. there is no connecting and handshaking between Tape drive and Host, it is only autoloading, local proc. ? - Help me, please, if it possible... I never seen this failure in all tape drives, reel moves and after obtaining BOT jump forward, but doesn't jump back to BOT and failed... :

Re: problems with tape drives HP7980A HP-IB.reel stopping...
Water is a great damaging factor for tape drives. I know you can disassemble the drive (almost) complete and clean everything you can see. Not only should all moving parts and rollers guiders be cleaned, but also the logic boards and the cables and connectors. You are not allowed to remove any of the rolling parts, because you wont be able to readjust them without calibration tools. Then it should be reassembled after cleaning. Also use a cleaning tape several times, to remove all residue of the cleaning fluid. There is special cleaning fluid for things with water damage, but the heads and guiding system can be cleaned with clean alcohol (no spiritus)
Don't use any of the storage tapes, you have your data on, because you could damage the tapes. In the end, perhaps you have to buy another tape drive, to restore your data so save the tapes, till you are 100% sure the drive won't eat the tapes.

replace ALL belts in the deck (there are 3) the deck is sensing that the tape reels aren't moving and protecting it. that should solve your problem. do not use elastic bands, they will foul and destroy the gear driving the capstan.
Someone is going to have to look inside, the mechanism that moves the tape has a problem which will cause shutdown, possible belt or mechanical issue.
With cover off and a tape inserted look down at top of cassette and engage in FAST FORWARD----do reels in the cassette move quickly or not-----Sometimes if a worn belt or drive idler running the tape back and forth with fast forward and rewind will cure the issue for a short time----no movement equals no motion and unit should shut down.
Well two things have to happen to make tape move in a cassette deck. One is the Capstan shaft has to rotate and that is usually a belt link to a motor through a pulley. The second thing is you must have take-up torque. If the tape moves but the take-up reel does not pull it onto the take-up reel then you either have a eaten tape or the deck will shut off. in your complaint it could be any of these items- maybe a bad Idler from the reel motor or the capstan belt is old and stretched.
Main code 2X : Mechanism control system error 574 Failed to detect the T reel FG during search.
This means the take up reel stopped rotating during forward search. It shut down assuming tape was spooling loose into mechanism. Could be just a faulty cassette tape. A common problem is also when labels have been placed in the wrong places on the cassettes, stopping the lid from opening fully and stopping the reel reaching the reel motor drive.Manually eject the tape and try another tape. If the fault continues, have a look for something in the way under the cassette such as post it notes, paper clips, torn labels etc. Have you had the unit serviced since you got it? Could be time to get it to a service centre for help.
you need to have a tape in place on the reals or it will stop.Hold the tape feeler spring in place and prevent it from moving forward it is located on the left side just remove the SONY stereo tapecoder cover and you see it
It may need to be cleaned. Mechanical problems are one of the big problems with VCRs they use alot of mechanical moving parts and play for so long they fail. Plastic parts dont help much either. The pinch roller takes up the slack and is usualy the part that fails first because it constantly runs along the tape and builds a coating on the rubber so it doesnt grip the tape and pull it back into the cassette. If its not pulling the tape back in then it hangs up inside and you cant get the tape out. Fastforward uses the reels to pull the tape not so much the roller.
Try and stop 2 times then fast forward then eject the tape. Try and eject the tape while its fastforwarding so it doesnt do anything else.
Sometimes machines will unload after its been in fastforwad a while then it will eject. You will hear a change in the sound when it unloads, you can hear the mechanical arms move the tape in and out of the cassette. Thats when you eject it. You cant really clean it till you get the tape out.
YOu can clean the pinch roller with fingernail polish or paint remover. It is a wheel inside it looks like a black tire. It pinches the tape against the capstan arm this is why it developes a film or a shine on the rubber making it slip.
