Why won't Windows Error Recovery tools work?

Cannot boot to windows. I tried F1, and F8 all options: Repair Your Computer & Safe Mode & Safe Mode w/ command & 'Last Known Good Configuration' & Start Normally Tried the F12, Boot Devices Menu...did the Hard Drive Diagnostic..got a Pass, did 'reboot. It just keeps returning to Windows Error Recovery screen with option Launch Startup Repair automatically in 30 seconds OR Start Windows Normally. Which ever option is used they revert to screen showing Dell Logo, fills in the bar, then back to Window Error Recovery screen. This is on my Dell XPS 410..built May 2007

This means that the hard drive is corrupted such that the Windows Recovery tools can't solve the problem. You may have lost the MBR or the partition table.

The PASS means that there are no bad sectors. However, it doesn't check for bad files. If the problem is in the MBR, you will need a Windows OS install or upgrade disk for your OS (x32 or x64) or a recovery disk. Some members of a Windows Users group may have spare copies of the install disks. Alternatively, a third-party partiton management recovery disk may work. I hope you have a recent backup though since restoring from the backup may be needed.

If the problem is with the MBR, press F12 repeatedly on powering up the computer. Select the CD/DVD drive from the list (This is the one-time boot option. If you miss the timing, power down and retry.) With a Windows CD/DVD, follow the on-screen prompts to access the disk and choose Repair your computer. (This option is in smaller text below the Install now button.) Select the command prompt option. From here: type in "bootrec.exe /ScanOs" (without the quotes) and press enter. If any Windows installs are found, you are good to continue. The command, bootrec.exe /RebuildBcd , may be sufficient. If it isn't, use the bootrec.exe /FixMbr and bootrec.exe /FixBoot commands after rebuilding the BCD file. (Press enter between each set of commands.) Try starting the computer and create a new backup soon if it works. For other partition tools, follow their directions for MBR repairs.

If bootrec.exe /ScanOs doesn't find any Windows installations, try accessing other drive letters until you find your Windows OS. (For example, type C: or D: and press enter. Then type dir and enter.) If you have access to another computer, pull the drive and use a hard drive dock or USB to hard drive adapter to check the disk out elsewhere. I recently had a drive that reported having a RAW format with most tools. In my case, I was able to use a specific recovery tool, TestDisk for Windows, to salvage a few files that were newer than the last backup. Sometimes, this tool will be able to recover the partition table. (Use this tool with extreme care, it may render any original hidden backup partition unusable.) There are other disk recovery tools out there; some may work. You may want to run additional disk health tests while at this second machine.

If the system is faulty but the drive is otherwise healthy, restore using your last backup or the Dell Backup and Restore Utility. The Utility may be in that list of options after you press F8. (Note: the Dell Backup and Restore will return the system to the factory settings. Since the system started with XP and the above header indicates the Vista OS, there may not be a recovery partition available. Similarly, if you upgraded the hard drive, the recovery partition might not be usable.) Follow the directions from your manual/on-screen. If your backups are on CD/DVD or you have a recovery disk, use the F12 process to access the backup.

I will admit that with the recent drive I just fixed, the restore from the back up left a problem. This system was a Win8.1 drive and ended up with a MFT mirror issue. I solved this with the chkdsk c: /offlinescanandfix command on the next restart. (This is a switch option only available with newer Windows systems and the NTFS file system. The usual command would be chkdsk c: /f /r /x .)

    There are other possible issues that keep Windows from booting. However, registry problems or deleted Windows OS files are usually related to human error or problems with antivirus software. (There have been a few times when parts of Windows were quarantined by a new patch.) If these are possible issues, please add more information about the software you were running before the system entered the boot loop. Cindy Wells

Startup Repair cannot repair this computer automatically


Try booting into the Safe Mode and check if the issue persists.
Safe mode is a troubleshooting option for Windows that starts your computer in a limited state. Only the basic files and drivers necessary to run Windows are started. The words Safe Mode appear in the corners of your monitor to identify which Windows mode you're using.
1. Restart your computer. Click the Start button, click the arrow next to the Shut Down button, and then click Restart.
2. Do one of the following:
· If your computer has a single operating system installed, press and hold the F8 key as your computer restarts. You need to press F8 before the Windows logo appears. If the Windows logo appears, you'll need to try again by waiting until the Windows logon prompt appears, and then shutting down and restarting your computer.
· If your computer has more than one operating system, use the arrow keys to highlight the operating system you want to start in safe mode, and then press F8.
3. On the Advanced Boot Options screen, use the arrow keys to highlight the safe mode option you want, and then press Enter.

Method 2: Also scan the Computer for error using chkdsk command in the Command Prompt from the System Recovery Options Menu.

To open the System Recovery Options menu on your computer
1.Remove all floppy disks, CDs, and DVDs from your computer, and then restart your computer using the computer's power button.
2.Do one of the following:
•If your computer has a single operating system installed, press and hold the F8 key as your computer restarts. You need to press F8 before the Windows logo appears. If the Windows logo appears, you need to try again by waiting until the Windows logon prompt appears, and then shutting down and restarting your computer.
•If your computer has more than one operating system, use the arrow keys to highlight the operating system you want to repair, and then press and hold F8.
3.On the Advanced Boot Options screen, use the arrow keys to highlight Repair your computer, and then press Enter. (If Repair your computer isn't listed as an option, then your computer doesn't include preinstalled recovery options, or your network administrator has turned them off.)
4.Select a keyboard layout, and then click Next.
5.On the System Recovery Options menu, click a tool(Command Prompt) to open it.

6. At the Command Prompt, type: chkdsk /r . Press Enter.


When you restart your system, your computer will be scanned for errors and attempts will be made to correct them.

You can follow the given steps to avoid blue screen error..
Start Windows in Safe Mode:

Step1: Turn on your computer and press the F8 key repeatedly from your keyboard. You must press F8 before the Windows logo appears. It will display the Advanced Boot Options screen.

Step2: From Advanced Boot Options screen, choose Safe Mode option then press Enter.

Step3: If Windows loads and works fine in Safe Mode, a bad driver is probably causing the error. Uninstall device drivers and reinstall them. If Windows experiences issues in Safe Mode also, repair your hardware.

Startup repair:

Step1: Shut down your computer and then restart it in Safe Mode (see step1).

Step2: From Advanced Boot Options screen, select "Repair Your Computer" and hit Enter. Choose your preferred keyboard layout and then click "Next."

Step1: Click "Startup Repair", and follow the on-screen instruction .Startup repair can solve this problem.

System Repair:

Step1: Follow step1 and step2 from Startup repair section.

Step3: Now select system restore from the System Recovery Options menu. And follow the on-screen instruction to select a restore point.

I would suggest you to boot the computer in safe mode and check if you can boot to the desktop and post back the result. To boot to the desktop in safe mode with networking keep tapping F8 key during restart. Once you see the option to boot in safe mode with networking select it and press enter.

Step 2

If you are unable to boot to the computer in safe mode, you may try to perform a system restore from Windows Recovery Enviornment (WINRE Mode) to an earlier date and check if it helps you fix the issue.


If you have Windows Vista disk you may try to perform a system restore using Windows Vista disk:


a. Insert the installation disc.

b. Restart your computer.

c. If prompted, press any key to start Windows from the installation disc.

Note: If your computer is not configured to start from a CD or DVD, check the information that came with your computer. You may need to change your computer's BIOS settings. For more information, see BIOS: frequently asked questions.

d. Choose your language settings, and then click Next.

e. Click Repair your computer.

f. Select the operating system you want to repair, and then click Next.

g. On the System Recovery Options menu, click System restore and select the date when the computer was working fine.


If System Recovery Options is a preinstalled recovery option on your computer:


a. Remove all floppy disks, CDs, and DVDs from your computer, and then restart your computer.

Lenovo Y410, It does not boot. Throws error: There was problem in staring windows due to some error. How do I get to start windows in safe mode?

It seems that you are having problems booting to windows. There are a number of steps you can try to fix this issue.

1. boot to safe mode. Start tapping F8 right after the computer turns on. This would cause the system to boot to windows advanced boot menu. Once you see the advanced boot menu then just choose safe mode. If you managed to boot to safe mode then you can perform system restore from here. To run system restore just click on start, all programs, system tools, then click on system restore, once system restore has been launced choose a date when the computer was working fine

2. You can also try to boot to windows recovery environment. to do this keep tapping F8 right after the computer turns on. choose the option "repair my computer". The system would now boot to windows recovery environment. From here you can run startup repair and system restore

3. If none of the above steps work then you can use the One Key Recovery feature of a lenovo Y410. Please note that this would reset your computer to its factory image so this would cause you to LOSE DATA on the system. Before you use this feature make sure that you have a back up of all of you data. Note that the computer must be turned off. Press the NOVO button on the computer. refer to the image for its location on your computer

Pressing this button while the computer is off would launch the one key recovery of lenovo. From here you can restore the system to its factory condition.

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \windows\system32\config\system


(1)When you power up the computer press F8 key then enter in safe mode.
Then if you are able to enter in safe mode then uninstall driver or software which you installed recently and face this error.
(2)If you are not able to enter in safe mode Then you need to fix error on hard drive.For that you need windows disk or recovery disk.
Boot your computer with that disk
For that when you power up the computer press F1 or F2 "del" key to enter in bios.
Then go to boot menu and set first boot device as your cd or dvd rom.
Then save settings and exit bios.
Insert windows disk in cd /dvd rom.
Then it boot with that disk.Then you get this message "Press any key to boot from cd.."
Then press any key.
Then follow the procedure then enter in recovery console mode then type in prompt "chkdsk /r"
Then type "y"
Then it fix error on hard drive.
Then check if again you are not able to enter in windows then boot again and this time choose "R" option for repair previous windows " then it repairs old windows then it loads again old windows.

Windows shut down to prevent damage


You need to boot your system into Safe Mode by pressing F8 just before the Windows startup screen loads, once in Safe Mode do a system restore to a previous date to when your system was working.

This should sort out your problem.

Can't factory restore dell inspiron 531 (windows xp).


You might want to try going into setup and setting your boot drive options to DVD drive as your 1st, HD as 2nd and Floppy as 3rd. Put your windows disk in the DVD before boot and run the program from DVD.

Windows failed to start !...


Hi,
Boot your computer with the recovery CD In the Drive.
You should get the option ** Boot From CD**
highlight click Yes, and overwrite the O/S.
This will re-install windows over your existing version, replacing any corrupt-deleted-missing Files.
