No such thing as 'sand pump'...
There's a circulation pump and sand filter.
filters don't pump water.
if no water is flowing, then pump is either not primed, or valves are closed.
Or water level is not at point of water entry into suction port.

I have a Hayward s166t sand filter and no matter what setting I have it on tons of water is coming out of my waste line! This is my 1st pool and 1st sand filter!!

I used to work in a municipal swimming pool. 325,000 gallons!

It sounds like you have the sand filter on to clean if water is coming out of the waste line. That is called 'back flow'.

Basically, the water from the pool comes into the top of the filter and the muck settles on the top. You need to add Gypsum (Aluminium Sulphate) to the water which is a floculant. This makes organic material form into a layer on top of the sand. The flocculated layer further adds as a filter. You need to regulate the flow of water into the filter as too fast and you force sand into the pool.

When you clean the sand filter, you do a back flow. So by altering valves, you put the water from the pump into the bottom of the filter and the water lifts the muck and dirt off the top of the sand and discharges it to waste. It is important to also regulate the flow as too much will discharge the sand. That happened in our municipal pool and discharged 6 tons of sand in the space of 2 years.

your owners guide is here. Take a look at the pipes, valves and pump and work out where the flow is going to.

How to replace filter sand

  1. Open air relief and drain plug to allow air into filter and water out.
  2. Take apart filter, remove all nuts/bolts/screws/fasteners and separate the filter. Could need some force to separate
  3. Use a shop vac to suck out the sand or a cup, be careful not to be too violent, if you damage laterals sand will go into the pool
  4. Check the laterals, No cracks or damage
  5. Close drain plug.
  6. Go to pool/home store buy POOL SAND. Amount required should should be posted on the filter somewhere. any extra will go into pool, or backwash out.
  7. Add some water about halfway of the filter, slowly add sand back into filter, dont be too violent. be careful not to get sand into any piping it will go back into pool.
  8. Prime the pump(add water to it) backwash the filter for 2~3 minutes
  9. Close air relief
  10. Run pump on normal open air relief as need to let excess air out .
Done!

Leaks sand

you might have a broken lateral (takes the clean water to pool) that sucks sand in and pumps back into the pool. Also if you either just replaced sand, or disturbed it by backwash or something similar it could be a temporary problem sending out some sand temporary until it settles

How does Hayward Sand filter work

Excellent answer Robco, One slight variation of an explanation about "waste"... When in this mode, water never actually enters the filter tank, it goes in the valve from the pump, and out of the valve through the waste port.
Very similar to the "recirculate" mode, it comes from the pool with the help of the pump into the filter valve, and right back out the filter valve, without ever going into the tank, and back to the pool via the return port.

I have had my pool up since April, and it has been working fine. On Sunday, I vaccumed pool, and when I turned pump back on, it threw dirty water into pool, and now it throws sand into pool. We took out...

Is there an air ejection tube in your filter? My guess is you do and the little tube is not sticking up onto the top, rather, the little tube is in the sand and it is vacuming the sand into the return water flow due to the "venturi effect".

Check it out and let me know what you find.

You may have to change the sand if you never have. Or if it's not too bad you can "clean" it. When you removed the plug form the pool, there should actually be two parts. This first part threads directly into the filter, and has a screen on it to hold back the sand. The second one is the plug. This is the only part you should remove, except when changing sand etc. Even if the pool filter is working you can have cloudy water. See you pool supply, and try a floc to help settle dissolved solids in your pool. You add this, run the pump awhile to mix, turn pump off overnight, and then vacuum everything next day. Then turn pump back on.

Replace the lateral assembly. Be sure to fill the tank just under half way with water before adding the sand back in. Otherwise you risk cracking the laterals.
