If the main suction motor does not run I would first suspect the switch. These often need replacement. It could be a wire or motor isuue too. All of those need an expert to fix.

I had a similar problem with a Dyson DC18 Slim. The brush bar was spinning but the vacuum motor would not turn on (i.e. it was "dead"). The problem was due to a clog in the air channel that leads up the side of the Dyson. There was a piece of paper that wasn't allowing any air to flow thus causing the motor to not start (there must be a vacuum detection control device that prevents the motor from starting if there is no air flow in the lines). To fix this, make sure you clean every air chamber, filter, and intake on the vacuum.

Hi, This is Jim with Crucial Vacuum,

More than likely the main issue you're having with your Dyson DC17s suction is do to your filters being clogged. Since the brush roll is spinning fine, but overall suction is lacking it definitely isn't an issue with a clog at the base of the vacuum, but more than likely is a filter issues.

We have a video on YouTube in regards to replacing your Dyson DC17s motor filter. You can find the video here:

Hi , have you checked all the filters as when they get clogged up the motor will not switch on i am sure there is a temp cut out switch incorporated in the main motor. You should also check the top section of the filter canister as this section can clog up quite badly . You should type in on youtube how to clean out a dc17 and you will be suprised at what amount of dust and hairs collect at the very top section of of the dc17. If after all the cleaning is complete and it still does not work you will have to get the motor checked.

You have power so it can't be the switch or power cord. It is most likely the motor or the cord from the switch to the motor that is the problem. Start by checking these areas first.

SOURCE: rotating brush will not turn on my Dyson DC07

Yes I had the same problem on my animal Dysom. There is a button on the top of the dysom that turns the cacuum on. Right beside that button is another one that turns on and off the brush!!! Good luck!!! I accidently one day bumped that button and couldn't get my brush to work but after troubleshooting it, that was my solution.

SOURCE: The brush bar on my Dyson DC17 stopped turning.

If this model has a brush control - i.e a roller at the side of the model which controls brush to spin or not, then its a protected brush model - therefore even if the drive belt is intact the Dyson would have to be repaired by a service personnel or professional. The brush protection isn't able to be taken apart and sounds like it may well have slipped off due to tension.

SOURCE: motorized brush bar not turning on Dyson Vacuum

Apparent common failure is that either the thin yellow and or blue motor drive wires that run from the LH side of the vacuum where the "control board" is located down into the hinge / ball area become stretched and then fray and eventually break. Happened to my Dyson twice. First repaired under warranty, second took about 20 minutes. You need a Torx screwdriver to remove the LH panel ( 4 screws) and also an access panel (2 screws) at the side of the ball which permits access to the blue / yellow wire connectors. I replaced with a new wire and connectors having fed the wires through the access hole making sure sure enough wire was available for the movement of the handle. Also ensure that when the covers are replaced they do not trap any wires underneath.

SOURCE: Brush roller won't turn

On my Dyson, there is a brush reset button on the top right hand side (if you are looking at the front) that you can press to reset the brush. I was vacuuming and too lazy to move a toy and this worked for me once I freed the rope from the brush.

Brushes won't turn

The brushes are powered by air suction from the motor. At the heart of this complicated system are roller bearings. When one fails the system fails. This is not one of the parts that Hoover thinks is needed on it's parts site so I've haven't found a way to repair this.

My Kirby seems to be putting more dirt on the floor than what it is picking up? The brush roller is turning but it leaves dust streaks . It also shoots particles out the side instead of vacuuming it up....

Hi there. It sounds like you belt may be stretched. Simple turn vac upside down, start it up and carefully press your hand on the brush. If the belt is stretched the rollewr will stop turning. If this does not help, you probably have a clog in the power head area. Hope this helps, Chris

Actually have model 6594. no suction. any suggestions?

If you hear the motor running and the vacuum is not sucking up debris, I would believe you have a problem with the beater brush. Problems with this brush are usually caused by 1 or 2 if not both of these problems: 1- The drive belt for the brush is broken. 2- The brush itself is frozen due to debris. Remove brush and clean all debris off. Pay special attention to end pieces of the brush that hold it in the vacuum. The brush should rotate around these two pieces. Clean ends and spray on a little WD40 and turn to work it so that the brush turns freely. If you find the brush is frozen and needs to be cleaned, probably a good idea to put a new belt on at the same time. Be sure the belt is put on correctly so the brush turns in the proper direction. Feel free to contact me if you have questions.

Brush bar is not turning when I turn on my dison vacum

Hi There,

The Dyson DC15 All floors is actually a 2 motor upright, meaning the suction motor is separate from the motor that rotates the brushes. The first thing you should check is the reset switch on the brushes. Behind the brushes there is a little red pole, push this down to reset the brushes, and see if this fixes the problem.

If not, then you may have a bad on/off switch for the roller brushes. Try pushing the switch next to the main on/off switch that controls the brushes up and down, up and down, can you hear the brushes attempt to come on at all? If you could hear them come on even somewhat, this means that your brush on/off switch is bad and needs to be replaced.

If nothing happens when you push this switch, it still may be bad and not getting any power at all to it.

Does the machine make any sound at all when you try to turn the brush switch on and off?

Please try pushing the reset switch, then testing the on/off switch first. If neither one of these solutions works, please just use the comment field on the repair and let me know, and I can then walk you through some more advanced diagnosing of your machine.

Thanks,

Chris Jones

Kenmore progressive 360 vacuum cleaner has low suction

Check the tube that leads down to the brush head for clogging as well as any motor or HEPA filters. If that still shows nothing, take the cover off the brush head (like you're changing the belt) and look for obstructions in there. Usually, if you have low suction on the accessory hose, the problem is with a motor filter, HEPA filter, or a clog where the hose goes into the unit. If you have good suction on the accessory hose but none on the floor, it's usually in the brush head (clog or broken belt) Good luck

Kirby g4 problem

1. Take the brush roll and belt off the vacuum. Put the head back on the vac.
2. Turn it on and see if the bag inflates with good power. Does it sound normal? This will tell you if the problem is with the motor. If you have a good inflation of the bag and a bad noise in the motor, you need to take it in for service. If the motor is fine, you need a new spinning brush assembly.

The screw heads of the brush roll face towards the floor so you can adjust them while the brush is in the vacuum. When you turn them clockwise the brush comes down and gets closer to the floor for better carpet cleaning. You should also change the belt on that vac once a year. Just because the belt isn't broken doesn't mean it's o.k. Once they stretch out the power from the motor is lost and the brush won't clean anything.

No suction

You have a clog somewhere in the vacuum. Check the hose and the little trap door on the underneath side of sweeper.
Does the brush turn? If not, then the belt that drives the brush is broken. Replace the belt
