Depends on the mower and deck. some are not adjustable. make sure you have the correct size belt.

I have a self propelled lawn mower and the the belt that propells the wheels is loose, do I need to replace it or is there a way to tighten the tension.

Cathy, there is a way to adjust belt tension on some models whether it is by the cable or a slotted bracket where the idler wheel is mounted, depends on make and model. If you have your manual check in it for belt adjustment. Could be stretched belt, stretched cable, worn/oil on pulley, seized tensioner, stretched/broken spring on tensioner, etc.

Deck belt loose ,how to adjust tension to make tighter

Not sure what type mower is but as long as the tensioner is moving to tighten the belt then you will need to replace the belt. Most tensioners have a spring attached to them make sure you did not lose a spring or the tensioner is not stuck and going to full depth before you replace the belt.

How to adjust a loose mower deck drive belt?

check your pulleys to make sure they haven't split as this does happen. Adjust the belt tensioner to tighten the belt when you engage the clutch to drive the mower. You should be able to see the belt tensioner by dropping the cutting deck to its lowest point and looking underneath the mower to see which pulley actually puts the tension on the belt to make it drive. there is no need to start the mower to find which pulley needs to be adjusted, it should be obvious when you look at the belt and the pulleys.
Hope this helps you

Blades turn slower when deck is lowered on cub cadet 1042

Had the same problem after winter storage and couldn't find an answer anywhere. I noticed that the drive belt (not the ribbed deck belt) was loose when the deck was down below 4 and tight when it was up higher.
That told me either belt is stretched beyond the belt tensioner's or the tensioner wasn't working right. Found that the tensioner was hard to move and would stick. Greased the zerk on top of the large bolt, worked it back and forth a number of times by pulling on the belt. Problem fixed. But I'm thinking it may be time to order a new tensioner spring and belt anyway. Hope this helps someone down the road. If so pass it on. :) jerseyjimmers@yahoo.com

If you did not use the original manufacturer belts it will cause this as lawn mower belts are designed to slip when not under tension (so called graphite Belts) where other belts are designed not to slip even when some tension is lost.

Cable to engage the self propelled pully came loose. How do i reattach it?

Hi,
Instructions
Step 1 Locate the spark plug wire, and disconnect it from the spark plug.
Step 2 Remove the screw that is used to secure the belt cover to the mower with a screwdriver. Take the belt cover off of the mower.
Step 3 Loosen the belt tension bolt with the socket wrench. The belt tension bolt is located next to the wheel adjustment lever on the left front of the mower.
Step 4 Pull the front part of the drive belt off of the transmission pulley that is located on top of the motor.
Step 5 Tilt the mower on its side, and pull the rear part of the drive belt over the mower blade.
Step 6 Insert the rear of the new drive belt over the mower blade, and place the front of the belt over the transmission pulley.
Step 7 Tighten the belt tension bolt with the socket wrench.
Step 8 Locate the adjuster nut located on the underside of the mower near the belt tension bolt.
Step 9 Tighten the nut with the wrench until it touches the spacer, and slightly loosen the nut so that the spacer can turn.
Step 10 Set the belt cover back onto the mower, and secure it with the screw.
Step 11 Re-connect the spark plug wire to the spark plug.
Good Luck!

check for a broken belt tension er or maybe grass clippings under belt area, check for a broken or loose pulley bearing, even a bent shaft on the deck.

Hi Paul It sounds like the belt is worn, stretched, or possibly just two long for your machine. Save yourself a lot of aggrivation by checking your operator manual and getting exactly the right belt for your mower.

You don't say how old your machine is but if it has been mowing for many, many hours, the tensioning spring may need to be replaced. If that is the case you can order a new one at Sears.com
