Some blu-ray players cut costs by eliminating operations from the console directly and it sounds like you have one of those. What I would do is to get a cable box remote and they are usually universal remotes. Then go through the programming of the remote to control other devices in addition to your cable box, and select the DVD option so you can use that remote to control it. G

As newer bluray movies come out they are constantly tweeking the format. More then likely you need to update your bluray players firmware or software. There should be an option under the menu for the bluray player to update the unit of course this will require that you have it hooked into the internet via ethernet cable or wifi network.
