I have the Craftsman GT5000 24 OHV tractor lawn mower. It's been in storage for a while, I have replaced the battery, spark plugs, fuel filter, and oil. I can't get it to start. Does the engine have a pump primer? Any suggestions? It just turns and turns. I can't get it to start unless I put gas in the air filter then it will trun over but it won't stay running.

Take fuel line off, fuel run out. If doesn't remove fuel filter, if not. Remove fuel cap, if not check line coming from tank.

Take the fuel line before or after the fuel pump??

  • Harrie Mar 29, 2015

just see if any fuel is coming to the carburettor when you try to start. That is after the pump. If nothing comes there, you also can check before the pump. But when there is an air bubble in th pump it will come to the pump, but the pump will not be able to pump fluid. It can't produce a "vacuum" in air. It is a fuel pump.

I assume the fuel is coming into the carburettor. A air bubble in the fuel pump will keep it from working correct.

No gas is getting to the carburetor but gas is going into the fuel pump.

  • Harrie Mar 29, 2015

when the bass is going is and you are sure the pump is working, press out the air. If there is no air in the pump, perhaps you need to replace it? But don't hurry replacing it. make sure the fluid is running through the pump and try again.

Sounds like the carburetor needs a good ultrasonic cleaning as old gas will leave behind varnish and gum deposits clogging the carburetor fuel passages up.

that makes sense. I can't seem to locate a manual on this mower. Any suggestions on the best way to do the carberator cleaning? Is there a Carb Cleaner? Or is this something I would have to have done at a shop?

  • Eugene Rounds Mar 29, 2015

The carburetor would need to be disassembe to clean properly.

If you have expereince in doing this then there is two options on cleaning. One involve the old style dip cleaner and the other which is more enironmental and user friendly is ultrasonic cleaning methrod using soap and water.

If you don't have the exprience or don't feel comfortable doing this then taking in into a repair shop would the next option.

I have CraftsmanLT1000 lawn tractor, Smokes heavily.

Many times a dirty air filter will cause this on this style of engine. When the filter is plugged, it creates a 'rich' fuel condition, and the engine smokes heavily, the excess carbon is drawn into the air filter, and plugs it even more.

check spark plugs, air filter, fuel filter, choke linkages (for full choke/no choke operation) and crankcase oil.

Crankcase oil can become fuel contaminated, thus overfilling the crankcase and filling the crankcase breather with raw oil/fuel, and this is drawn into the air filter, plugging it, and starting this senerio.

If there is fuel in the crankcase oil, drain completely, and refill with fresh oil. Then you need to look towards the carb for an inlet needle sticking, broken, worn.

Lawn Tractor won't start Craftsman LT1000 17.5 OHV

The starter bendix is not engaging properly the bendix pushes the starter gear into the flywheel gear when the starter spools up, it may need minor lubrication.
It sounds like the engine is not getting fuel as it should, the main jet may be restricted from varnish if she stumbles under a load especially if the plug tips are white after running for 1/2 an hour.
Remove the float bowl and clean the jet, make sure the fuel is still good, gas that smells like a library is more like varnish and less like fuel.
