The drive belt goes around the transmission pulley (located under the cooling fan) then attaches to the engine. You will then need to loop the around the idler set. You will find a "v" shaped pulley and a flat pulley. The flat fits on the outside of the belt and the belt fits down into the "v" pulley. You need to remove the tension of the idler set to fit the belt.

Go to searspartsdirect.com and enter your model number in the space on the right of the page. When the list of illustrations comes up click on ground drive. This will show you the correct installation of the drive belt. Or do you mean " How the Heck do you put this on?"

SOURCE: How can I refit the

I did it with a large screwdriver. Pressing the band with the flat end of the screwdriver pushed the drive band back under the drive wheel behind the gear mechanism at the rear of the mower.

When it was back under, manually rotating the blade made the band run free over the drive wheel

I have a old lawn keeper edger with a briggs and stratton 2 hp engine. It has always run great but the belt came off and we cant figure out how to get it back on. Can anyone help with that?

If the belt just came off, it should be fairly easy to refit back on its pulleys. Use the largest pulley to assist in pulling the belt on by turning the pulley by hand. If the belt has broken, you may have to remove 1 of the drive shafts to slide the new belt over. I had a B and S powered mower which broke a belt and I had to strip off the end of the mower and unbolt the main drive shaft to slide the belt down. took me about an hour and a half. Glad they don't break too often. Ive heard of others who unbolt the motor and disconnect the clutch drive to fit a new belt. have a good look at the unit to see whats easiest.

My Craftsman riding lawn mower LT2000 (2002/2003) stopped moving. The drive belt seems to be loose. The engine starts and cutting blade engages fine. Was working fine but stopped working when it started...

there should be a drive belt tensioner somewhere on the belt, it usually works off the clutch/brake, when you push on the brake it apply's the brake and also takes the tension off the belt to stop it from moving.
Not sure of your ride on mower but that is how my ride on mower works so I hope this helps.

How to adjust a loose mower deck drive belt?

check your pulleys to make sure they haven't split as this does happen. Adjust the belt tensioner to tighten the belt when you engage the clutch to drive the mower. You should be able to see the belt tensioner by dropping the cutting deck to its lowest point and looking underneath the mower to see which pulley actually puts the tension on the belt to make it drive. there is no need to start the mower to find which pulley needs to be adjusted, it should be obvious when you look at the belt and the pulleys.
Hope this helps you

I need to replace the drive belt on my lawn tractor.

Things You'll Need
  • Wrench set
Show MoreInstructions
    • 1Find out the driver belt's part number. This can be found in your lawn mower's owner manual.
    • 2Find a store that sells Craftsman lawnmower parts and see if it has your specific belt in stock.
    • Sponsored Links
    • 3Clean out the underside of your mower's deck, making sure there are no leftover pieces from your old belt still stuck inside.
    • 4Find your mower's tensioner, which keeps the pulleys in place, and loosen it (this usually involves loosening a single bolt). Then slide the pulleys closer together so that you can fit the belt over them more easily.
    • 5Arrange the driver belt over the pulleys (you should refer to your user manual for the exact configuration of the belt over the pulleys, since this will vary depending on the specific model of your lawn mower).
    • 6Tighten the tensioner back up, leaving only about a finger's width left of play in the belt.

I have a craftsman riding mower model # 971.274822 and recently replaced the mower drive belt. Although it is the correct belt, 42", it is really loose! How do adjust the tension? Thanks

there is no adjustment on the drive belts but you do have a clutch adjustment to do this you have to remove the mowing deck (NOTE) draw a digram of the way the deck belt runs adjust the clutch lever from the bottom of the mower, test mower with out the deck on and if this solves the problem reinstall the deck....

I have a craftsman model 971.271552 riding mower. I was driving it and it made a noise. Now it will not move. I can push it in neutral, but not when in gear. The belt seems to be o.k. It starts and runs...

The transmission has given up the ghost. Pull the release pin - get it on jack stands and pull the batter. Remove the battery box and look for a tube sticking straight up from the transmission. Stick a straighened hanger down the tube and do a 'stick check' on the fluid level. Fill as needed.
