Couple possibilities. Was the starter just replaced? If so. Were their any shims (small metal pieces) that were not put back? They space the starter so the bendix and gear can align with fly wheel.. secondly could be a bad starter, broke bendix. Bad gear..or third missing teeth on either fly wheel or starter..
starter need to be recondition or ring gear on fly wheel might also be damaged just repair starter motor first and look at ring gear when starter motor is out
replace the starter and the flywheel-the bad starter has not engaged the teeth on the flywheel fully and has ground some teeth off so you'll fit that space every once in a while-cheers Denny
it can do the pinion may be worn, take off the motor and see! do it now beause it might be the ring gear, you see if you ahve a bad pinion then it will dammage the fing gear! if the ring gear is dammaged... you can replace starter,, It may seem fine, but the dammaged ring will grind up the new starter's pinnion, once the ring gear is dammaged then it is gear box out! so look now to avoid more lenghty and expensive repairs!! Have a nice DAy........Bruce.
Was the starter shimmied to match up with the fly wheel properly so the starter gear fly wheel ring gear don't bind or out to far apart that they don't reach each other. The other problem is that if the starter gear was to far apart, it may have shaved the teeth on the starter gear causing your engine not to turn.
Without hearing it I would only be guessing, however I believe starter solenoid is a good guess.
When you turn the key the first position it applies power to the vehicles ignition coil and other operational components. The second position applies power to the starter solenoid which moves the starter gear against the fly wheel so the starter motor can crank the engine to start the combustion process. If the solenoid does not move the small gear against the big gear you will hear the starter motor running with no resistance producing a high pitch whine. Some of the gears could be missing on the fly wheel but it would not start unless you physically moved the vehicle forward to manually move the fly wheel.
Therefore, I would have the starter (starter and solenoid are usually together) checked or replaced. If you have some mechanical knowledge you could do it yourself with minimal tools.I believe turning the key back is not helping you. You just need to turn off the ignition and try to start it again. Sooner or later the solenoid will fail completely and not work at all. I would not want to be stranded so I would fix it soon but it could work intermittently for a while.
would replace starter and inspect battery, cables/terminals also if problem still chattering u may have damaged the fly wheel the chattering is the starter not fully engaging the fly wheel. most likely starter but bad battery cables would also cause same symptoms hope this helps u
