A 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
Best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
The service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.

You can write to S&W for a free owners manual, they want you to have one. It will explain cleaning procedures, etc. Or you can go to Gunparts.com, they a full exploded view of every gun made. Or you can just start popping pins and pulling parts off, you will find out quick how it comes apart. It is hard to explain over the fone here, but basically , get the slide off, and the rest just follows. Depends on how far you want to go. The little knob just above the trigger towards the front is the slide release. Pull, push, pop, I'm not really sure how it goes, If it was a colt, I could tell ya. Hope this helps.

You should take your S&W to an armery; they have the information to tell from model and serial, what year was it produced.
