May have sheave timing key. It hold the flywheel in time. Pull shroud, remove big nut, remove flywheel, replace key in flywheel and crankshaft. 2 dollars for key.

You probably sheared the key that keeps your flywheel in time. And you could have broke the crankshaft after you check the key , and still will not run make sure your piston is moving .That was a big blow your motor .

There is an idler pulley near the drive pulley under the engine. It is made of plastic and is a common failure. It freezes up and doesn't want to let the belt move. Have you noticed the smell of hot/burning plastic? You can replace it with an original, but it is still plastic. Metal replacements can be had. I think I got some from so try there. They are a great resource. Shipping is fast and inexpensive and they have everything a guy could want.

Craftsman 42" riding lawn mower blade free spinning but wont cut

It sounds to me that you need a new mower deck drive belt, or your blades need sharpening. If the blade edges are rounded, they won't cut butter... Also, when mower is off, check mower deck drive pulleys to make sure you don't have any that are locked up or are dragging. You can check this by pulling the belt away from pulley and spinning the pulley by hand. MOWER MUST BE OFF before attempting any of these checks. You would be surprised how many people would try this with the mower running.
Hope this helps
