Question about John Deere Garden

1 Answer

My John Deere mower won't start when its cold. It starts right up if I prime it by shooting it with starting fluid or dumping gas down the carb.

It will start after it has been started the first time for the day. It only has problems on the initial start.

Take the fuel line off carb, and see if fuel runs out. Your fuel cap vent may be plugged.

I replaced fuel filter and pump but no gas flows to the fuel filter

Hi Bethant:
I've had a similar problem with my Craftsman since I bought it.
At every cold start I have to remove the air filter and toss a thimble volume of gas into the carb to prime it. It then starts instantly and runs fine. Will restart while hot but not after a few hours.
I realize that priming it does not solve the problem, but unless I install a manual primer in the fuel line I'll just accept it.
Hope this helps,

Has spark fuel and 125 compression will not start?

Use a small amount of starter fluid in the intake past the filter. If the engine fires than you can be confident it is a carburetor problem.

Check for water in the gas

The carb cleaner may not be volatile enough to support ignition. The over the counter starter fluid is easily ignited even in cold weather.
If the engine has been in storage with old gas it is likely that residue has formed in the carburetor. If it does fire up with stater fluid but will not run with full choke it will most likely require a carburetor cleaning.

My lt 133 john deere mower has gas in oil and back fires. runs 5 min and stops.

It's going to need a carb kit to fix the problem. Make sure your gas cap is venting ok, because gas expands in the summer and can force gas to pass thru carburetor and flood the cylinder then passing down into the oil. Depending on the age of your mower, the carburetor may have a gas shutoff solenoid on the bottom and this may have malfunctioned. Another is a bad float or needle valve which a carburetor kit would fix. A needle kit with bowl gasket may be all it will need. Hope this will help.

Gardenline petrol mower model 8846 wont start

I have a John deere L118 with a 42" and snowblower that wont start without a direct prime in the carb then runs fine. I adjusted the valves from another post (that did work for a small engine i had) but no change this time. I pulled the carb and found it clean except the o ring above the solinoid at the botton of the bowl had expanded and was not sealing the gas the way it should. Put a new one on and cleaned and air blasted just in case. Re assembled and it would not start. I turned it over and found the gas flow was as weak as a old old guy with a prostate problem. I decided to install a primer bulb just after the gas filter and it starts up every time. if it uses a gas pump to hold the prime and it does not have the engine crankcase pressure on start up to squirt extra pressure thus gas into the carb when cold, this will tax your battery and starter before it starts. I installed a Honda car battery by cutting the housing slightly. because when it snows in ontario Canada, and its cold, You want that puppy to bark!

John Deere Snowblower 1032 won't start. Obvious solution?

First dump the old gas and put in fresh. Clean or replace spark plug.
Put a squirt of starting fluid in the carb. If it fires the ignition system is good. Do this a few times because there is still old gas in the float bowl and fuel line. When the fresh gas gets to the carb it will stay running. If it did not fire with starting fluid the points and condensor will need to be replaced and maybe the coil.

Won't stay running after prime runs out

starving for fuel. first check for bad/old gas, then restrictions in the fuel delivery including fuel line, filter, or buildup of debris in tank or any sharp bends or 90deg. fittings. then pull the float bowl and make sure the float is regulating fuel fuel into the bowl, but most likely your main jet is plugged. use a fine piece of wire like guitar string to runthru the jet located at the lowest part of the carb that hangs down into the float bowl. the jet will be on the side or bottom of this lower piece. put bowl back on, get gas to the carb and recheck starting problem. good luck.
