What is the meaning of limp home mode

It means the computer noticed something wrong or lost contact with an important sensor that could ruin the engine or transmission and has de-rated the power so you can get home without the car stopping or damaging itself. Limp Home Mode or Limp-in is an operating condition set by the vehicle computer.

I have a 2004 ford explorer. i cannot drive past 30 or 35 mph. vehicle starts jerking back and "check engine soon" light came on. what is the problem?

Go to an Autozone or Oreillys for a free scan. Then get your repair parts. There can be many things including a "Limp Home" mode which it sounds like it is in. Check your Antifreeze level, watch your Temperature gauge as Limp mode can mean there is a heat problem in some system and the engine is designed to keep the RPM's down. Actually having the car limit its speed is an indication of the Limp and eliminates some other problems.

If you are far away from a parts store you might be able to get it scanned free someplace else. The scan does not fix it, but can diagnose it. You can contact us about the Codes and we can give you repair information and most good Autoparts places can tell you repair info too!

2002 Impala: transmission limp mode...

Most transmissions have a limp mode, or limp-home mode.
If the driveline computer thinks there is something wrong, it can lock the transmission into one gear, such as 2nd gear. Usually reverse will also be available. The Impala automatic has 4 speeds. 2nd speed or gear will get you home, but the engine rpms can get a little high. I wouldn't get on the expressway will in limp mode.
Before taking to the shop, you might want to try and reset limp mode by turning the car off for a couple minutes, or you may have to disconnect and reconnect the battery.

Starts out in 3rd gear

Trans shifts into gear harshly, car feels sluggish off the line, No 1st, 4th or TCC lockup available, Manual 2nd, 3rd and Reverse are only available gears, CEL is on: Transmision is either in limp-home mode or has lost electrical power. If there are lots of error codes in the PCM, check the underhood fuse that powers the transmission, and if it pops again, look for a short in that circuit like an O2 sensor harness touching exhaust. Otherwise, check PCM codes for a particular fault in the transmission causing the PCM to put it in limp-home mode.
What is "limp-home mode" ? This is a fault mode in which the transmission either loses electrical power or the PCM deactivates all of the electronics. The transmission will default to max line pressure. The driver will have Reverse and 3rd, with manual 2nd available by putting the gearshift in 2 or 1 (doesn't matter). 1st, 4th, and TCC lockup will not be available. It will not hurt the car to drive it like this for short periods, but use manual 2nd to get the car moving, and be aware that the trans will generate more heat than normal while operating in limp-home mode due to increased torque converter slippage during 2nd gear starts and no lockup in 3rd gear.
Before guessing at transmission problems, check the fluid level (car warmed up, engine running in Park on level ground) and have the PCM scanned for trouble codes FIRST. This guide is meant for problems that do not show up as PCM codes (like shift A&B solenoid failures, for example).

Engine dont run right till i disconnect the map sensor

when the pcm reads a complete sensor failure it goes into what is called a limp home mode which is a default setting for engine operation. no sensors are adjusting fuel mixture or ignition timming in this mode so yes you have a sensor out somewhere and its a very good chance its the map sensor but that is not going to be a fact with out diagnosing the sensor with a diagnostic tool another sensor could be the culperate and the unplugging of the map sensor caused a complete sensor failure and sending it in to limp home mode

1999 voyager

this is called "limp mode" which means to "limp" home. Chryslers default to limp mode when there is a problem with a speed sensor, body control module or other sensor

scan the computer and see what it says

I sometimes remove a bettery terminal leave disconnected for a few minutes and this resets the computer and clears codes

better to scan though and clear and see if it helps
