CONVERTIBLE TOP WONT GO UP

Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) is an important component for the proper function of your 2004 VW Beetle Convertible Turbo's transmission. Here are the steps to check and add ATF fluid:

1. Locate the transmission dipstick. It is typically located near the back of the engine on the driver's side.
2. Pull out the dipstick and wipe it clean with a rag.
3. Re-insert the dipstick fully and remove it again to check the fluid level. The fluid should be between the "MIN" and "MAX" marks on the dipstick.
4. If the fluid level is low, add fluid through the dipstick tube. It is recommended to use the same type of fluid specified by the manufacturer, Volkswagen G 052 162 A2 or Volkswagen G 052 990 A2.
5. Repeat the process of checking and adding fluid until the fluid level is between the "MIN" and "MAX" marks on the dipstick.
6. Run the engine for a few minutes and recheck the fluid level to make sure that it is correct.

You should never add brake fluid to a vehicle unless there is a leak. If the fluid level is down the brakes are worn. Adding fluid will only overfill the system and will pour out when the brakes are replaced. The fluid goes into the mastercylinder attached to the brake booster on the drivers side under the hood. The master cylinder will have 2-4 steel brake lines going into it

Check to see if the top motor is running when you press the top up switch. Car has to be in park with emergency brake engaged. If motor runs but top will not move or binds then one or both of the lift cylinders are bad. Usually there will be hydraulic fluid leaking from the cylinders if one or both will not hold pressure. Replace cylinders if bad. The top could probably be manually closed if the lift cylinder arms are detached from the top frame.
If motor does not run when the switch is pressed then check your fuses, the switch and the connector at the top motor to see if it is getting power.

the motor just pumps hydraulic fluid into the lift pistons. If you are low on fluid, the motor can't create enough pressure to run the pistons. Check the fluid level.

ADJUSTMENTS Fluid Level

1. Remove rear seat. Refer to Section 01-10 .

1. Carefully remove the rubber fill plug from the back and the reservoir and check the fluid level. The level should be at the bottom of the filler hole. If necessary, add Synthetic Mercon® Multi-Purpose Automatic transmission fluid E6AZ-19582-B or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESR-M2C163-A2. CAUTION: Do not overfill or the reservoir seal could be blown out.
   

1. Replace fill plug with a new fill plug.

1. Bleed system as outlined if necessary.

You are probably low on fluid.
Behind the rear seat is the motor/pump/reservoir.
With the top down, fill the reservoir with ATF.
Cycle the system a few times.
Repeat till the reservoir will accept no mor fluid.
Chedk the lines and cylinders for leaks. The fluid must be going someplace.
You can change it to a manual top by removing the bolt at the top of the cylinders and lowering the both shafts down into the cylinders.

push hard in at the base of the seat then lift up.  Why not get to the pump from the trunk?
