Each handset in a multi-handset phone system must be identified by the base unit. This is because most units have an intercom capability that can communicate between two handsets. If the battery of a handset dies completely or is disconnected and replaced, then base unit loses it contact with the handset. To re-establish the connectivity, you must seat the handset in the charging cradle of the base unit. Once it is identified it can be taken back to its remote location.
