This printer problem is usually fixed by one of the following two solutions.

1) The Cyan cartridge is not seated 100% correctly. If the locking handle is not seated correctly, the printhead is obstructed from properly developing the the black developer at the extream right hand side. When reseated, the light can then see past the handle and place the image properly.

2) The printhead is dirty ( usually toner dust) and needs to be cleaned. To clean the printhead, open the front cover, pull back on the blue handle on the right hand side. This opens the cover to the cleaning wand on the right hand side of the printer. Gently pull the cleaning wand ALL the way out, and then slide back in ALL the way. Do NOT just move the wand back and forth. this will just push the debris around. The wand is designed to move across the printhead in only one direction. When you pull it out to its full extent, it is lifted up so that when you push it back, it is actually above the glass, not on it. When it reaches its full inward position, it drops back down to go over the glass again from left to right.

Make sure that you change this cleaning pad each time you change the imaging unit ( a new pad is included with the new drum).

Important note: If cleaning the printhead works, but then the print fades out again after a short period of usage, a more serious problem exist in which one of the photo developers is leaking. This is not a user replaceable part. The color of the defective developer would correspond to the color of the cleaning pad after cleaning.

It can either be the toner cartridge itself, or the fuser.

Try a full cleaning, and if that does not help at all, you will have to replace the toner or fuser or both.

White line along right side with black ink only

One of our IT guys came out and said he had figured out the solution on another printer with the exact problem. The problem is that the ink cartridge is not in tightly enough. It LOOKS like it is; the lock is even shut and the drum rolls smoothly. BUT, there is a tiny, and I mean tiny, bit of space between the cartridge and the drum, thus the ink gap. So, the solution is to be sure the cartridge is pushed back into position very tightly. We had been tentative in shoving the cartridge in because of the plastic pieces, but the lock locked just fine and we heard a slight clicking sound. Now we know to put it in carefully, then push hard into place. Problem solved.

Try the cleaning rod. visit:
for images (under replacing the "cleaning rod pad") for where to find the cleaning rod. You likely don't need to replace the pad, just use the rod (pull out and push in 10X) and try to print again.

Documents are printing fine but the right hand edge has black dots on it like 6-8 sapced out along the right hand edge.

check your print cartridge and your fusing element. you will need to dead cycle the printer to check the cartridge (print a document, when it is half way through turn off the printer, check the toner cartridge for your dots.) are you able to see your fusing element by opening the rear door? check the edges for dots on the fusing element. also there is a transfer roller or belt in your printer, that may also be dirty.

Right side no yellow ink

You can get the manuals for the 3100cn printer from the Dell support website ( They include some troubleshooting steps for determining what is causing a number of different problems with the printer. Did you make sure there was nothing blocking the toner on that side of the toner cartridges you replaced? If you haven't already tried it, I would also suggest cleaning the printer to see if that fixes the print problems you are seeing. The User's Guide (in the link above) has a section describing how to do this. If that doesn't fix things, run the tests for print quality and contact Dell support (contact information is in the manual, or on the website). Hopefully this will help you get the problem fixed if you haven't already done so. Larry Dell Customer Advocate
