Question about Nikon Coolpix 4500 Digital Camera

1 Answer

Colors off Something has changed.  In the beginning (years ago) my 4500 got great interior and exterior pictures.  But now the colors are off.  And fooling around with the image in Photoshop doesn't really fix it.  There is an overall underexposure without a flash (indoors and outdoors).  And a tendency to overexposure with a flash (indoors, especially).  And the colors aren't right either.  Although there are a differences between what happens to each color, the general issue is a lack of saturation without flash. Has anyone else experienced anything like this? Curiously, -Jerry-

Re: Colors off

I don't think you'd like to write down all your settings. =)

Of course, make sure your Auto is set, this ensures you are allowing the camera to make all choices for you. If the pictures still don't come out correctly, you may need to have the camera serviced.

If pictures can be taken in Auto mode, but not in (P)rogram mode or others, then give it a try to RESET all options and "start over" like "in the beginning".

The possible reasons are Pg. 91 of the manual:

  • White balance is not on Auto, or incorrect for the lighting conditions. Pg. 92-94
  • The wrong metering makes the lighting evaluation go funny. Pg. 95
  • Bracketing could be set wrong, which makes takes two or three extra pictures with compensation +1 and -1 of your current settings in order to try and capture a better picture at the instant of the original. Pg 116-117 (less likely though)
  • Exposure compensation is set too incorrectly for the conditions. Pg. 108-109
You can find these steps on page 119 of the manual.

To do this follow these steps:
  • Choose a program mode
  • Press the Menu button
  • Goto the bottom of the menu list to choose Reset All
  • Select it and reset all settings
This might have to be done for each program mode.

You will need to adjust the "white balance". Your camera may be able to do this by pointing it at a gray surface, and setting something. I don't have your camera instructions, but it's a normal adjustment for indoors.

You are looking at two different monitors with different settings. In most cases you will need to do some editing yourself on your computer because of the difference. Or the brightness can be done in a lab.

Photo colors are not true on my new Kodak....something wrong?

The Kodak CX4310 is the same as the CX4300 but the 4310 is a Wal-Mart special color. The camera feature that controls color balance is called "white balance" and on the 4310, it is totally automatic. Which means you have no control. If your color is not correct, return the camera. There are not many cameras that use a dock to recharge the camera batteries and connect to the computer. So you will not have many choices if you are looking for a different camera. One camera (without a dock) you should look at, is the Olympus Stylus 300. It is a better choice than the Kodak. It uses rechargeable batteries and the charger is included.
